About San Francisco Center for Osseointegration

San Francisco Center for Osseointegration provides dental care on Sutter Street in the Union Square area of San Francisco, California. Wisdom teeth are removed when they are impacted, repeatedly infected, decayed, or damaging the tooth in front, since they arrive last and often into a jaw with no room left. Not every wisdom tooth needs to come out — one that erupts cleanly and can be kept clean is often left alone.

Routine attendance, roughly every six months for most people, is what actually keeps small problems small. A lot of decay and gum disease develops without any pain in its early stages, which is why regular checkups matter even when nothing seems to be wrong, rather than only booking an appointment once something hurts.

A first appointment at a new practice typically covers a full examination, a review of your dental and medical history, and a professional cleaning, with X-rays if you do not have recent ones. It is also a reasonable time to raise any longer-term concerns, cosmetic or otherwise, so they can be factored into a plan going forward.

Day-to-day oral health still comes down to the basics between visits — brushing twice daily with fluoride toothpaste, cleaning between the teeth, and limiting how often sugary food and drink appear through the day matters more than the total amount eaten at once. Regular professional care is what catches whatever those habits do not.

Digital X-rays are a routine part of dental care because they show what a visual exam alone cannot — decay forming between teeth, bone loss below the gumline, and how developing adult teeth are positioned in children. They use a low radiation dose and are taken on a schedule matched to individual risk rather than at every single visit. Do wisdom teeth always need to be removed?
No. Wisdom teeth that come through cleanly, in a good position, and can be kept clean are often left alone. Removal is generally advised when they are impacted, repeatedly infected, decayed, or damaging the tooth in front.
Why do wisdom teeth cause problems?
They arrive last, often into a jaw with no room left, so they become impacted or come through at an angle. Partly erupted wisdom teeth are also very difficult to clean, which is why they are prone to repeated infection and decay.
What happens during a routine dental examination?
The dentist checks the teeth for decay, examines the gums, looks at any existing fillings and crowns, and screens the soft tissues. X-rays are taken when there is a reason to look between or beneath teeth.

Had a great experience here. After my tooth was knocked out during a medical procedure, Dr. Gurries saw me very shortly thereafter and explained to me what the dental implant treatment would consist of. I came back a few weeks later for the treatment, which was frankly fairly pleasant (IV sedation helped). I was expecting lots of pain afterwards, but I really only took a few Tylenol the first day and never needed anything more after that. Dr. Gurries is kind, gentle, and competent. If I ever need another dental implant, I wouldn’t hesitate to return here.

Got my wisdom teeth removed under general anesthesia. I was really nervous at first, but Dr. Gurries and the staff explained everything with confidence and care, and put me at ease. The procedure went super smoothly and I experienced almost no pain, even after the anesthesia wore off. Highly recommend!

I cannot recommend Dr. Gurries and the entire team enough! I recently had all five of my wisdom teeth removed at once (yes, 5), and despite how intense that sounds, the procedure went incredibly smoothly. What amazed me most is that I still have full sensation, meaning Dr. Gurries was extremely precise and careful with my nerves—something I was really nervous about beforehand. Recovery is never fun, but what has truly made this process easier is how communicative and responsive the entire office has been. Any time I had a question or concern, whether by phone or message, someone was there to assist me right away. I never had to wait days for a response or jump through hoops to get help, which is rare and so appreciated. I went in twice for follow-ups—once because I was in pain, and they got me in quickly to check things out and relieve the discomfort, and another time for a routine check-up. Both times, Dr. Gurries and his assistants took great care of me, making sure my healing was on track. From the procedure itself to the ongoing support, this team has been great!! I highly recommend.

This was such a pleasant experience. Got my wisdom teeth taken out by Dr. Gurries. Super cool dude :). He explained the procedure well (wisdom teeth removal) and made me feel less anxious about the whole thing. The staff were so nice and even remembered my name! Overall, would definitely recommend!

Dr Christian Gurries and his assistant Jennifer were spot-on professional, made me feel 100% comfortable and even covered you with blankets since it’s kept cold on purpose. It happened so quick I thought.we had not started! $5-6k is no joke but great service and staff are worth it and this is the second time I have come back since 2012, fyi. Solid crew, young, very observant and srsly on-it! 10 out of 10 Best, Stephen S.
