About San Francisco Dental Wellness

San Francisco Dental Wellness operates on Sansome Street in the Financial District area of San Francisco, California. Holistic, or biological, dentistry applies standard dental diagnosis and treatment within an approach that emphasises material choice and conservative treatment, considering oral health as connected to the body more broadly rather than treating the mouth in isolation.

Routine attendance, roughly every six months for most people, is what actually keeps small problems small. A lot of decay and gum disease develops without any pain in its early stages, which is why regular checkups matter even when nothing seems to be wrong, rather than only booking an appointment once something hurts.

A first appointment at a new practice typically covers a full examination, a review of your dental and medical history, and a professional cleaning, with X-rays if you do not have recent ones. It is also a reasonable time to raise any longer-term concerns, cosmetic or otherwise, so they can be factored into a plan going forward.

Day-to-day oral health still comes down to the basics between visits — brushing twice daily with fluoride toothpaste, cleaning between the teeth, and limiting how often sugary food and drink appear through the day matters more than the total amount eaten at once. Regular professional care is what catches whatever those habits do not.

Digital X-rays are a routine part of dental care because they show what a visual exam alone cannot — decay forming between teeth, bone loss below the gumline, and how developing adult teeth are positioned in children. They use a low radiation dose and are taken on a schedule matched to individual risk rather than at every single visit.

Left untreated, small dental problems tend not to stay small. A minor cavity that would have been a straightforward filling can progress to needing root canal treatment and a crown, and early gum inflammation that would have reversed with a good cleaning can progress toward bone loss around the teeth. Catching things early is generally the difference in both effort and cost. What services does San Francisco Dental Wellness offer?

Are holistic dentists still trained in regular dentistry?
Yes. A holistic practice is a licensed dental practice that has chosen a particular philosophy around materials and conservative treatment — it is not a separate qualification, and standard diagnosis and treatment still apply.
Do holistic dentists use fillings without mercury?
Practices describing themselves this way typically favour tooth-coloured composite and ceramic materials over amalgam. If material choice is your reason for choosing a practice, it is worth confirming directly what they use.
How can I look after my teeth between appointments?
Brushing twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and cleaning between the teeth daily covers most of it. Limiting how often sugary food and drink appear through the day matters more than the total amount consumed.

Came in for a cavity in a weird area on the back of my teeth Dr Kwon was really gentle with the shots, explained everything that was going to happen. When I come to the dentist my concern is how gentle they are going to be and I’ve been coming to this office for a very long time, the Dentists are always very gentle Really appreciate that!

Normally I don't like going to the dentist but Gloria and Dr. J made my visit super easy and stress free. I was in and out in a jiffy. I walked in, got seated, Gloria was super friendly, made me feel comfortable, and took my scans. Then Dr.J came in and explained all the results I needed and explained why I was having some tooth pain and what the steps are to prevent it. Super knowledgeable and friendly staff, would recommend.

Zero transparency, zero accountability. An unfortunate nightmare from start to finish! One star is too good at this point. I was referred to Dr. Chui by my ENT for debilitating TMJ. I’d had previous reconstructive surgery and was nearly “lockjawed” for four months prior to this referral. The consult alone was $300, but I felt Dr. Chui was incredibly thorough in his exam and even demonstrated how stabilizing my bite could bring significant relief. He recommended a 3-month treatment program, which included a lower jaw appliance, red-light therapy, and ultimately PRP injections to help rebuild a “cushion” in my joints. Total cost: $8k. My first question to the office manager, Yesenia, was whether medical insurance would cover any of this. I was out of work and couldn’t proceed if I had to pay 100% out of pocket. She assured me they could submit a pre-auth to check coverage. The pre-auth came back with 80% coverage, so I proceeded and made the first two of three payments. From the start, I was never given a proper breakdown of costs (aside from a verbal summary) outlining what I was paying for (my mistake for not insisting, but I just wanted pain relief). Immediately, there were issues with the documentation the office submitted to my insurance. Yes, there was an initial error on the insurance side, but that was resolved. For the next month and a half, I was stuck playing middleman between my insurance and Dr. Chui’s office, and despite repeated requests, the office could not (or would not) produce a clear manufacturer’s invoice or a breakdown of costs matching the superbill that was submitted (this one document would have recouped a fair portion of my money). At one point, my insurance company called the billing department to discuss a resolution and was hung up on! As a side, if I had a dollar for every time Yesenia told me “We aren’t contracted with insurance companies, so we won’t provide any more documentation,” my whole treatment would be paid for…To make matters worse, PRF injections were suddenly presented as an additional cost on top of the $8k, something never disclosed at my consult. Instead of resolving discrepancies, I was met with constant demands for immediate payment and threats of being sent to collections, all while my insurance was still waiting for additional documentation. I was repeatedly blocked from speaking directly with Dr. Chui about my treatment plan or billing concerns. Yesenia claims the doc is bcc’d on emails but refused to let me meet with him, effectively gatekeeping my own care. If Dr. Chui was indeed seeing these emails, it’s abhorrent that he didn’t intervene as Yesenia continued to talk in circles and REFUSED to schedule me for an appointment. The lack of transparency, refusal to provide basic documentation, and aggressive billing practices make this office feel more like a collection agency than a healthcare provider. I wasted countless hours going back and forth between their staff and my insurance, with no resolution and no accountability. Dr. Chui, you may want to re-think who you have running your office. Patients deserve honesty, clarity, and access to their doctor, none of which you’ll find here. Proceed with extreme caution.

Dr. Chui is highly knowledgeable and efficient. He provided a clear explanation of the diagnosis and treatment plan, and the procedure was completed with precision and care. The office is well-equipped, and the staff maintains a high standard of cleanliness and professionalism. Appointments are well-organized with minimal wait times. Overall, a reliable and competent dental experience.

I have been visiting San Francisco Dental Wellness for over a year now and have been so impressed by the office, staff, and all my services/appointments. I even referred my friends to start going because I know their experience will actually be good. Historically, dentist appointments have always been an anxiety-inducing chore for me, but going to this office I feel relaxed, I’m met with kindness, professionalism, and given such a high level of care.
