About Sandcastle Pediatric Dentistry
Sandcastle Pediatric Dentistry is a dental practice on East Pacific Coast Highway in the Park Estates area of Long Beach, California. Pediatric dental care is built around treating children specifically — dentists with additional training in child development and behaviour management, and offices designed to make a first visit unintimidating. Guidance generally points to a child's first dental visit around age one or within six months of the first tooth.
Digital X-rays are a routine part of dental care because they show what a visual exam alone cannot — decay forming between teeth, bone loss below the gumline, and how developing adult teeth are positioned in children. They use a low radiation dose and are taken on a schedule matched to individual risk rather than at every single visit.
Left untreated, small dental problems tend not to stay small. A minor cavity that would have been a straightforward filling can progress to needing root canal treatment and a crown, and early gum inflammation that would have reversed with a good cleaning can progress toward bone loss around the teeth. Catching things early is generally the difference in both effort and cost.
Continuity matters in dental care — seeing the same practice over time means your history, X-rays, and any patterns in your oral health are already on file, rather than starting from scratch at each visit. That familiarity is part of what a regular dental home offers beyond any single appointment.
Dental anxiety is common, and most practices are used to working with nervous patients — through clear explanations of what is about to happen, a slower pace where needed, and sedation options for patients who want them. Avoiding the dentist out of anxiety tends to make eventual treatment more involved, not less.
Children benefit from starting dental visits early, generally by their first birthday or within six months of the first tooth coming through, mainly so they become familiar with the setting before any treatment is actually needed. Establishing that routine early tends to make ongoing checkups far less stressful for both child and parent. Great caring service
The best kids office! Staff are all friendly & patient. Dr Ortega has been wonderful with my 6 year old and her care. Explains things well, talked her through a tough procedure. It’s a nice clean office, interesting toys to play with in the waiting room & TVs mounted on the ceiling for a great distraction during cleaning or procedures.
We came here for a second try/opinion… The first dentist recommended my son be put to sleep and included teeth that didn’t exist on their original treatment plan so I was excited when we found this doctor- I normally don’t leave negative reviews, but I feel this experience is worth sharing for other parents. I brought my son in for treatment and made it clear that he does not do well with feeling confined or having his nose covered. Despite that, the office insisted on using nitrous oxide. After going through the already stressful and upsetting process of numbing him, the dentist ultimately decided he was “not a candidate” and recommended full anesthesia — being put to sleep — to complete the work. This was incredibly frustrating and honestly traumatic for my son, especially considering nothing was actually accomplished during that visit and hewas numb for the next three hours. Thankfully, we sought another opinion and found a pediatric dentist in Los Alamitos who was able to complete all of his dental work while he was fully awake — no nitrous, no anesthesia, and no major surgical intervention required. It took us four appointments, but was well worth splitting up the visits. It was not traumatizing for my son, and he was comfortable throughout the whole process. Every child is different, and I strongly believe patient comfort and listening to parents’ input should be a priority. Unfortunately, that wasn’t our experience here. I would encourage other parents to ask questions, advocate for their child, and consider second opinions if something doesn’t feel right.
Dr. Ortega consistently displays the highest level of professionalism, practices with new and cutting edge technologies and connects with his pediatric population effectively. His office is welcoming and dental hygienists are timely and kind. Always a pleasure to visit!
Dr. Ortega & his staff are always so welcoming and make my 3 kids feel so comfortable. The office space is so nicely-decorated, clean, and inviting. They are very well-staffed with hygienists & office staff. Most importantly, Dr. Ortega is a truly compassionate & skilled dentist. He is extremely thorough & is really thoughtful about preventative measures. After having a terrible experience at another pediatric dentist, I was referred to Sandcastle & can honestly say that I wholeheartedly trust Dr. Ortega’s recommendations.
