About Santa Monica Periodontics & Implant Surgery

Santa Monica Periodontics & Implant Surgery operates on Wilshire Boulevard in the Northeast area of Santa Monica, California. Gum disease treatment ranges from a deeper professional cleaning for early inflammation through to more involved periodontal care once bone around the teeth has started to be affected. Bleeding gums are usually the earliest sign, and the early stage is reversible with proper cleaning and better daily plaque control.

Routine attendance, roughly every six months for most people, is what actually keeps small problems small. A lot of decay and gum disease develops without any pain in its early stages, which is why regular checkups matter even when nothing seems to be wrong, rather than only booking an appointment once something hurts.

A first appointment at a new practice typically covers a full examination, a review of your dental and medical history, and a professional cleaning, with X-rays if you do not have recent ones. It is also a reasonable time to raise any longer-term concerns, cosmetic or otherwise, so they can be factored into a plan going forward.

Day-to-day oral health still comes down to the basics between visits — brushing twice daily with fluoride toothpaste, cleaning between the teeth, and limiting how often sugary food and drink appear through the day matters more than the total amount eaten at once. Regular professional care is what catches whatever those habits do not.

Digital X-rays are a routine part of dental care because they show what a visual exam alone cannot — decay forming between teeth, bone loss below the gumline, and how developing adult teeth are positioned in children. They use a low radiation dose and are taken on a schedule matched to individual risk rather than at every single visit.

Left untreated, small dental problems tend not to stay small. A minor cavity that would have been a straightforward filling can progress to needing root canal treatment and a crown, and early gum inflammation that would have reversed with a good cleaning can progress toward bone loss around the teeth. Catching things early is generally the difference in both effort and cost. What is scaling and root planing?
It is a deep cleaning that goes below the gumline to remove bacterial deposits from the root surfaces and smooth them so the gum can reattach. It is normally carried out under local anaesthetic, often over more than one appointment.
Is gum disease reversible?
The early stage, gingivitis, is reversible with thorough cleaning and better daily plaque control. Once it has progressed to periodontitis and bone around the teeth has been lost, that bone does not grow back — treatment then aims to halt further loss.
How can I look after my teeth between appointments?
Brushing twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and cleaning between the teeth daily covers most of it. Limiting how often sugary food and drink appear through the day matters more than the total amount consumed.

This became my dental office after the Palisades fire destroyed my former dental office. Dr Kamins and staff relocated here and it’s been a flawless transition.

Dr. Ricardo is so easy to trust and he doesn't take unnecessary risks. During my procedure to remove an implant, extract a wisdom tooth and do bone and gum grafting, he stopped to explain the wisdom tooth removal was problematic because it was so embedded in the jaw and he did not feel comfortable with potential nerve damage after accessing X rays and more exploring. His work on cleaning the disease and setting up a recovery program was comforting. He is great!

Dr. R and his team truly stays connected with their patients. A good dentist from quality of service to good bedside manners are hard to come by. I drive for an hour from home because it’s important to me.

Dr Kamins has been our family dentist for about 25 years ever since our kids were born! We adore him, he does brilliant work, is kind, caring and sings while he works! There is NOTHING more relaxing than having your dentist hum along to oldies tunes while confidently and comfortably working in your mouth! We can’t imagine ever seeing anyone else!

Dr. Phil Kamins and his assistants, including the front desk assistants, are friendly and helpful. With my autistic son we have been visiting the dental clinic 3-4 times a year for cleaning, checkup and few other procedures thank to Dr. Phil’s good care of my son. We have 23 years of history with Dr. Phil and his staff. He is an exceptional professional and a caring human being with a good heart who provides the best care in a beautiful environment and at the best equipped clean clinic. We go wherever Dr. Phil goes.
