About SD Oral Surgery, San Diego

SD Oral Surgery, San Diego is a dental practice on Sorrento Valley Boulevard in the Sorrento Mesa area of San Diego, California. Wisdom teeth are removed when they are impacted, repeatedly infected, decayed, or damaging the tooth in front, since they arrive last and often into a jaw with no room left. Not every wisdom tooth needs to come out — one that erupts cleanly and can be kept clean is often left alone.

A first appointment at a new practice typically covers a full examination, a review of your dental and medical history, and a professional cleaning, with X-rays if you do not have recent ones. It is also a reasonable time to raise any longer-term concerns, cosmetic or otherwise, so they can be factored into a plan going forward.

Day-to-day oral health still comes down to the basics between visits — brushing twice daily with fluoride toothpaste, cleaning between the teeth, and limiting how often sugary food and drink appear through the day matters more than the total amount eaten at once. Regular professional care is what catches whatever those habits do not.

Digital X-rays are a routine part of dental care because they show what a visual exam alone cannot — decay forming between teeth, bone loss below the gumline, and how developing adult teeth are positioned in children. They use a low radiation dose and are taken on a schedule matched to individual risk rather than at every single visit.

Left untreated, small dental problems tend not to stay small. A minor cavity that would have been a straightforward filling can progress to needing root canal treatment and a crown, and early gum inflammation that would have reversed with a good cleaning can progress toward bone loss around the teeth. Catching things early is generally the difference in both effort and cost. This page has the practice's contact details and full service list. No. Wisdom teeth that come through cleanly, in a good position, and can be kept clean are often left alone. Removal is generally advised when they are impacted, repeatedly infected, decayed, or damaging the tooth in front.
How long is recovery after wisdom tooth removal?
Most of the swelling and discomfort settles within about a week, with the first two or three days the most noticeable. Surgical removal of an impacted tooth generally takes longer to recover from than a simple extraction.
Why do dentists take X-rays?
Decay between teeth and problems below the gumline are invisible to the naked eye, so X-rays are what reveal them. Modern digital images use a low dose and are taken only when clinically justified.

I had all four of my wisdom teeth removed at SD Oral Surgery, and I couldn’t have asked for a better experience. From my initial consultation through surgery and recovery, the entire team was professional, organized, and incredibly kind. During my consultation, Dr. Evans took the time to thoroughly explain my treatment plan. Because my wisdom teeth were impacted, I also needed bone grafts, and he carefully walked me through everything that would be done, answered all of my questions, and reviewed both my pre-op and post-op instructions with me. I especially appreciated that he recommended specific items to purchase ahead of time to make my recovery more comfortable. Before my surgery, my insurance made changes that affected my treatment plan. The SD Oral Surgery team handled everything quickly and provided me with an updated, detailed estimate that clearly listed every procedure, dental code, cost, what insurance would cover, and what my out-of-pocket responsibility would be. That level of transparency gave me a lot of peace of mind and made me feel confident going into surgery. On the day of my procedure, everyone was so welcoming and helped me feel at ease. They even had music playing while I waited, which made the environment feel much more relaxing. My prescriptions were sent to the pharmacy well before my surgery, so I was able to pick everything up in advance and have all of my medications ready when I got home. The surgery itself went smoothly—I was put under anesthesia, so I don’t remember a thing—and my recovery has been going very well. The office has already checked in with me twice to make sure everything is healing properly, which I really appreciated. The office is also very clean, has plenty of parking, and the staff was always available to answer my questions whenever I called. Scheduling my consultation was easy, all of my paperwork was handled ahead of time, and the team was prepared and organized every step of the way. I never had to deal with the frustrating back-and-forth that I’ve experienced with other medical offices. Overall, SD Oral Surgery made what could have been a stressful experience feel smooth, well-organized, and reassuring from start to finish. I highly recommend Dr. Evans and the entire team to anyone needing oral surgery. Thank you for taking such great care of me!

As a small business owner, I genuinely dislike leaving negative reviews — I understand how much they matter. But my experience was so unacceptable that I feel obligated to warn others. I was referred to Dr. Evans specifically because he is a biological dentist who specializes in ceramic implants. I scheduled my appointment about a month in advance. Before my visit, I proactively sent my existing 3D scan to the office via file transfer so I wouldn't need to be re-exposed to X-rays. I called to confirm receipt — and they confirmed they had it. When I arrived for my 2:00 PM appointment, the front desk told me I would need a new 3D scan. I explained I had already sent mine over. They acted as if they had no record of it — until they suddenly confirmed they did have it. Fifteen minutes later, they reversed again, claiming they couldn't open the files. I knew this wasn't a file issue, since every other office I'd sent the same files to had opened them without any problem. Eventually a second staff member was brought over, and after another 15 minutes, the files were opened. After more waiting, a staff member came to take me back — straight to the X-ray machine — and asked me to remove my earrings for a 3D scan. When I questioned it, she left, returned, and confirmed they did have my scan. I was sent back to the lobby. I was then brought to another room where staff asked me the exact same intake questions that no fewer than five different people had already asked me. It was now 2:45 PM, and I had not yet seen the doctor. They also made sure to charge me for the appointment before any services were rendered. At 2:55 PM — nearly an hour after my appointment time — I informed the front desk I needed to leave to pick up my child at 3:00. Only then did anyone rush to get the doctor. Dr. Evans came in at 2:57 PM, provided no information, answered none of my questions, and concluded the appointment at exactly 3:00. That was a complete waste of my time and money. The office is disorganized, the communication between staff is nonexistent, and there is zero respect for patients' time. You are the paying customer — and they will make you wait an hour without acknowledgment or apology. I would not recommend this office to anyone.

Dr Evans and his team are extremely caring and competent professionals. It’s rare to find a provider that is both. Dr Evans took the time to talk to my mother who has severe mental illness and thoroughly explain the procedure. He & his team were so on top of everything, from checking our insurance, walking us through the 3 stage treatment plan and adjusting post surgery meds because my mom had issues with certain antibiotics in the past. I absolutely trust Dr Evans & his office.

I had a horrible experience the first time I got an impacted tooth removed at a dentist’s office 5 ish years ago, and it scared me bad enough that I haven’t gone in to remove the other until today. I can’t recommend this place and Dr. Evans enough. The staff is incredibly knowledgeable and professional, and the best part is nothing ever felt like they were trying to get more money out of me. They were very honest, and gave me some great advice. They made me feel so safe, and the process was so quick and pain free, even with just the local anesthetic. The nitrous was very helpful and calming. The staff wrapped me in a blanket, played fun music, and were very efficient in both making me comfortable and getting the tooth out. Last time, it took 2+ hours for the same kind of issue, but Dr. Evans got it out in 12!! minutes with no pain and very little bleeding! I can’t thank you all enough!!

I had a consultation with Dr. Sharafi at SD Oral Surgery for two dental implants and I left feeling extremely confident in my care. From the moment I walked in, his entire team was professional, welcoming, and attentive. Dr. Sharafi took the time to sit down with me and thoroughly explain every aspect of the procedure. He made sure I understood all of my options and genuinely focused on what would be best for me, rather than rushing through the consultation. His patience, knowledge, and compassionate approach made me feel completely comfortable and reassured. He is truly an incredible doctor, and I’m so grateful to have been referred to him by Dr. Rahbar at Dentique. I would highly recommend Dr. Sharafi to anyone in need of oral surgery or dental implants. Exceptional care from start to finish.

My son had wisdom teeth removed. This is day 4. He is very swollen and in pain but that is too be expected with 4 teeth removed and two sinus closed. Very expensive overall. My removal of stars is because I didn't know and wasn't told I would need to pay for the consultation xray. I showed up for procedure and they said I owed an additional $62. At first they couldn't tell me why but eventually showed me it was for that xray. My insurance didn't cover it because that same xray was taken at my regular dentist office. That office referred me to this office. That office should have been able to share the xray with this office. Had I have been told i'd need to pay for this up front I would have requested the office share that xray. It doesn't feel right (or legal) to have surprise fees before a major procedure. They also struggled to apply my full deductible. I waited for Jan for this reason but they struggled to figure it out. Took about 25 minutes to get this all settled while my son sat there stressed out. Not a great experience. Dr (at consult) and nurse after procedure was very nice. They didn't allow me to go back with him. Fine for me though bc he's 16. With wisdom teeth over $2000 after my deduction of $1500, adding on another $62 for an xray that my son didn't need felt like I was taken advantage of and radiation my son didn't need. If an office makes a referral they should be able to share xrays.
