About Shandon Family Dentistry

Shandon Family Dentistry sits on Devine Street in Columbia's Shandon neighborhood, built around the idea that one dentist can reasonably handle most of what a family needs rather than routing every issue to a specialist. The practice takes on day-to-day dental work and more involved repairs under the same roof, from a child's first cleaning to a parent's crown or root canal. That setup suits people who'd rather have one office keep their dental history straight than repeat it fresh at a new practice every time something comes up.

Cleanings and fillings cover the everyday work, while crowns and bridges step in when a tooth needs more support than a filling allows — a crown caps a damaged tooth, a bridge replaces a missing one by anchoring to the teeth on either side. Root canals treat infection inside a tooth's pulp, and gum disease treatment addresses the tissue around the teeth before it reaches the bone underneath. Extractions handle teeth that can't reasonably be saved, and teeth whitening covers the cosmetic side. A filling and a crown can often be handled in one visit instead of two separate trips, and the office also fits in emergency cases when a problem can't wait.

If a cracked filling or a sudden toothache has you putting off a call, this is built for that — a practice that treats an emergency as a same-day problem, not a weeks-out referral.

Cost depends on what the visit actually involves — a routine cleaning and a multi-visit root canal aren't priced the same, and the office positions itself on the affordable end of that range rather than a flat rate. It's worth asking directly what a specific procedure will run, since only that gives you a number tied to your own mouth rather than a general estimate. For a Shandon or greater Columbia family weighing whether to split care across a general dentist, a specialist for gum issues, and a separate office for whitening, keeping cleanings, fillings, crowns, and the occasional root canal at one Devine Street address is worth a look.

Shandon Family Dentistry on Devine Street in Columbia, SC offers cleanings, fillings, crowns, bridges, root canals, extractions, gum treatment, whitening, and emergency care for families wanting one dental office for routine and urgent needs.

I told the Dentist and staff that I didn't like that hygienist polished my teeth before cleaning them and that I never had it done in that order before. They ALL got upset with me, and the dentist said he takes it personal that I asked other people if they ever had their teeth cleaned in that order. The lady that did my X-ray jumped in the conversation all defensive when I was not even talking to her. They do not like feedback, questions or concerns. Also, I was questioning that they said they have to bill my Health insurance FIRST and then my Dental insurance second. I was just expressing that these things never occurred before, but they all got irate that I was even asking the question. The dentist said by me asking others questions, it makes them look bad, as if they are doing something wrong. I asked him, are you saying I can't ask questions. I told him I was coming to him, as the owner, but I guess he doesn't appreciate that. Make this make sense.

Worst experience ever. I’ve never had tooth pain until after visiting this dentist. I went in for a cleaning and was told I needed over 8 fillings which is just not true. My teeth are very healthy. I agreed to the fillings because I thought it would be safe to trust a “professional” but this was the worse decision ever. Ever since I got the fillings my ear AND jaw has been in extreme achy pain. I don’t know what he did in my mouth during the procedure but something is just not right. I have never had tooth related pain ever in life. Now I'm having to take pain medicine just to relieve the misery. I feel I like he suggested fillings to make some money because they were definitely not needed. I know people who have terrible cavities and still don’t have fillings. Teeth are very important and once they are compromised there is no going back. I really really really regret going here. It sucks when you try to be a responsible, healthy adult and end up regretting it. I do not recommend.

This has been the worst dental experience I’ve had. I previously requested a printed breakdown of my costs, but it was never provided. When I arrived for my appointment, I was told I had to pay $1,000 upfront out of pocket, despite being informed earlier that I had no remaining balance. Additionally, the front desk staff was very rude and unprofessional. There was no greeting—only a blunt demand for my name followed immediately by payment information. Overall, the lack of communication, transparency, and professionalism made this a very unpleasant experience.

Weird policies … If you have a follow up appointment they wait for your next visit to let you know you have an outstanding balance, and cannot be seen (in pain) unless it is paid on the spot. No letter sent beforehand to make you aware. Very shoddy work, leaving space for food to get trapped in my gums, causing pain that they refused to correct. So this office filed a false insurance claim, stating the incorrect tooth number treated, to cover up the gap that was left open in my gums for the actual tooth that WAS treated. I reported it to my insurance carrier. Then, on a 3-way call to the office with my insurance company, the Billing person was very unprofessional, and rudely hung up on us! You would think that a “family practice”, would treat their patients “like family”! My bad, I usually read the reviews. Reviews don’t lie!

Highly unrecommended. This was one of the worst dental experiences I’ve had. Columbia in general is going downhill, especially with their healthcare service providers! I will not be returning. Dr. Desai needs a new profession.
