About Shelter Health Services Inc

Shelter Health Services Inc operates on Spratt Street in the Lockwood area of Charlotte, North Carolina. Comprehensive care generally means a practice can handle most of a patient's dental needs in-house — preventive, restorative, and often minor cosmetic or surgical treatment — reducing how often patients are referred elsewhere for routine work.

General dentistry covers the routine and restorative care most people need most often — examinations, cleanings, fillings, and preventive checks that catch problems while they are still small and inexpensive to treat. Regular attendance, roughly every six months for most patients, is what makes that early-catch approach actually work.

Left untreated, small dental problems tend not to stay small. A minor cavity that would have been a straightforward filling can progress to needing root canal treatment and a crown, and early gum inflammation that would have reversed with a good cleaning can progress toward bone loss around the teeth. Catching things early is generally the difference in both effort and cost.

Continuity matters in dental care — seeing the same practice over time means your history, X-rays, and any patterns in your oral health are already on file, rather than starting from scratch at each visit. That familiarity is part of what a regular dental home offers beyond any single appointment.

Dental anxiety is common, and most practices are used to working with nervous patients — through clear explanations of what is about to happen, a slower pace where needed, and sedation options for patients who want them. Avoiding the dentist out of anxiety tends to make eventual treatment more involved, not less.

Children benefit from starting dental visits early, generally by their first birthday or within six months of the first tooth coming through, mainly so they become familiar with the setting before any treatment is actually needed. Establishing that routine early tends to make ongoing checkups far less stressful for both child and parent. They do not service the general homeless. Only those at the shelter. They also only service women.

I wish I could rate this place a zero. I was filling out a application for services at the shelter next door and I started having contractions. The NP checked me and stated I was only 1 cm dialated. I refused treatment and tried to leave the NP and the RN tried to hold me against my will. They even went so far as to call the police on me for trying to leave stating I was in active LABOUR which clearly wasn't/isn't true because I am still currently pregnant. I will be following up Monday Morning with the medical director of this establishment.

The staff there don't know what they doing sometimes you have to remind them to give you the meds or something you asked for you have to remind them if not they will send you on the way. they don't provide a discharge paper with Information on it. A nurse her name starts with "M" was rude to one patient accusing the patient of something. I understand is a free clinic and is for the homeless but At least they can be a little more professional and respectful to the patients. They always have a interns there that don't know what they doing.
