About Smileworks General & Cosmetic Dentistry
Five minutes south of Belle Hall Shopping Center, Whipple Road hangs off Highway 17 within sight of the Mark Clark Expressway. It is a modest Mount Pleasant side street doing a lot of quiet work, and Smileworks sits on it, inside easy reach of Snee Farm, Belle Hall, I'On and the Old Village without ever joining the full length of the 17 crawl. Off-peak, you are at the door about fifteen minutes after leaving the peninsula via the Ravenel Bridge, and Daniel Island patients can cut across 526 in about the same. The trade-off is the one every 526-adjacent address carries: at 5pm the interchange decides how long your trip takes, which is exactly why weeknight hours running to 7pm matter more here than they would elsewhere.
Six dentists work out of this office, including Dr. Andrew Gibson, Dr. Tamara Caouette, Dr. Dana Durlach, Dr. Amber Connar and Dr. Bethany Herbert, and the scope stretches from children's checkups and gum disease treatment through implants, Invisalign, TMJ therapy, sleep apnea appliances and emergency care. Comfort is treated as a clinical variable rather than a garnish. The office uses computer-controlled anesthetic delivery, which is worth explaining, because most of what people remember as the sting of an injection is not the needle at all but the pressure of fluid being pushed into tissue faster than it can absorb. Metering the anesthetic at a slow, constant flow rate removes most of that pressure, which is why the same injection can feel completely different depending on how it is given. Nitrous oxide and oral sedation are both available on top of that, and they behave differently: nitrous clears within minutes of the mask coming off so you can drive yourself home, while oral sedation lasts hours and requires someone to drive you both ways.
The practice describes itself as locally owned and keeps same-day room for genuinely urgent problems, which is the useful part of a six-dentist roster. Hours are Monday through Thursday 8am to 7pm and Friday to 3pm, with no weekend cover.

Everyone is friendly, yet very professional and thorough. Been going there for years and never had a bad experience.
I have been a patient at Smileworks for over a decade. I’ve never considered going anywhere else. The staff are friendly, caring, helpful and the office is super clean. Their later hours are convenient for my schedule. It’s a big upgrade from my last dentist who didn’t even wear gloves. There are a lot of dentists in Mount Pleasant. Choose a practice that will treat you well and provide great care. Smileworks is that place.
Great professional dentistry
I never thought I would say I enjoyed being at the dentist. But today was an exception. Everyone at Smileworks is so nice and very professional. A special thank you to Gayle for taking such detailed notes the last time I was there. And a special thank you to Storm who put me at ease talking about books and of course remembering the unicorn. Thank you to everyone!
The Smileworks team is great. They are all customer focused, communication is wonderful, and they are accommodating to everyone there. After having a negative experience at another dentist in the Charleston metropolitan area, I came back to Smileworks and will never go to any other dentist again. Thank you!
Great dentist! No waiting. Schedules made easy. Reminders set before visit. They are very accommodating. I've been going here for 10 years and always a good experience. I took my 84 year old mother here and she loves them as well.
I recently visited Smileworks for the first time and honestly, it exceeded my expectations. From the moment I walked in, the staff was warm, welcoming, and genuinely caring — they made sure I felt comfortable throughout my entire visit. You could tell they actually care about their patients, not just getting through appointments. If you’re looking for a dentist office where the people treat you like a person and not just a number, I’d highly recommend Smileworks. Already looking forward to my next visit!
I’ve been going to Smileworks for more than 5 years. It’s been a great experience- their staff and providers are so friendly and have great attention to detail. Earlier this year, I brought my son in for his first ever dental appointment and was so impressed by how the team interacted with him, making sure he develops a positive association with these kinds of appointments. I highly recommend Smileworks for your dental needs!
Our entire family visits Smileworks, and we couldn't be happier with the care we receive. From the moment we walk in, the front desk crew greets us with warm smiles, and we are always taken care of promptly. The doctors and hygienists are fantastic—they make every cleaning a pleasant experience. We always leave feeling genuinely cared for and confident in our dental health. If you are looking for a professional, friendly, and efficient practice for your family, we highly recommend Smileworks!
My husband and I have been patients at Smileworks General & Cosmetic Dentistry since 2009, not long after they opened in 2008, so I guess you could say we’re OG patients! From the moment you walk in the door until the moment you leave, this office gives you such a warm, family feel. The front office staff are always kind, welcoming, and incredibly helpful every single visit. Dr. Gibson has truly created a wonderful space that feels more like a spa than a dental office. During your appointment you’re offered a blanket, headphones, and a TV while getting your teeth cleaned or any work done. Honestly, sometimes I just take a little nap! And that’s coming from someone who had severe dental anxiety when I first started coming here. The doctors, dental hygienists, and staff are some of the most caring and gentle people in the business. At the end of your visit, you’re even treated to a warm lavender washcloth and a bottled water. It’s absolutely spa-tacular! I’d also love to give a special shout-out to our longtime favorite hygienist, Kara. She truly gets to know you, cares about you as a person, and is incredibly sensitive to your needs. She is amazing! If you’re looking for a dental office that makes you feel comfortable, cared for, and even a little pampered, Smileworks is the place to go.
