About Somerville Family Dental
Somerville Family Dental provides dental care on Somerville Avenue in the Prospect Hill area of Somerville, Massachusetts. A family dental practice sees a range of ages under one roof, which for most households means fewer separate appointments across different offices. It typically covers routine checkups and restorative treatment for both children and adults, with referrals out for anything requiring specialist training.
Affordable care means the practice sets out to make treatment accessible on a self-pay basis or through a payment arrangement, rather than assuming every patient arrives with comprehensive insurance. It is worth asking directly what options exist before assuming a needed treatment is out of reach.
Dental anxiety is common, and most practices are used to working with nervous patients — through clear explanations of what is about to happen, a slower pace where needed, and sedation options for patients who want them. Avoiding the dentist out of anxiety tends to make eventual treatment more involved, not less.
Children benefit from starting dental visits early, generally by their first birthday or within six months of the first tooth coming through, mainly so they become familiar with the setting before any treatment is actually needed. Establishing that routine early tends to make ongoing checkups far less stressful for both child and parent.
Payment and insurance arrangements vary by practice and by treatment, so it is worth asking directly what is covered and what options exist for anything that is not, rather than assuming either way. Getting that clarified before treatment starts avoids surprises once it is underway.
Beyond any single treatment, most dental visits start with an examination — checking for decay, reviewing the gums, and looking at existing fillings or crowns — often alongside X-rays where there is a reason to look between or beneath teeth. That groundwork is what a dentist uses to explain any findings and set out next steps before you leave. I had a filling done by Dr. Shoji and had a positive experience. From the moment I sat down, he made me feel comfortable. He explained each step of the procedure as he went, consistently checked in to make sure I was doing okay, and took the time to answer all of my questions at the end. His calm, kind demeanor helped ease any anxiety I had, and the entire experience was much easier than I expected. I was also impressed by the respect and courtesy he showed to both patients and staff. I highly recommend Dr. Shoji and the team.
I've had a great experience with this office and am only leaving because I'm moving out of state. Dr. Nikhil and Dr. Shoji are both excellent and the staff is consistently friendly, efficient, and helpful. Appointments are smooth, questions are always answered clearly, and I never felt like I was being upsold. They also made the transition to a new dentist incredibly easy by sending over my records and x-rays quickly and free of charge. Highly recommend Somerville Family Dental!
We had a great experience experience at this dental office. I went with my two kids, and everything went so smoothly from start to finish. The did our cleanings and exams, and the care was excellent. Dr. Nick was extremely knowledgeable, patient and took the time to explain everything clearly without making us feel rushed. Our hygienist Tsering was absolutely wonderful with my kids - so gentle, calm and encouraging. She made them feel completely at ease, they both left feeling The office is clean and welcoming. Highly recommend!
Kind, Passionate, calm environment from the front staff, hygienist, and DMD. 10/10.
Highly recommend Dr. Nick and Somerville Family Dental, I've been a patient for several years now and they've provided me with excellent care, including referrals to specialists as appropriate. Dr. Nick and his team and attentive and knowledgable.
I was a patient at Somerville Family Dental for several years after my previous dentist disappeared. Overall, this is an excellent dental office with many strengths: What they do well: - Communication is outstanding—both text and email responses were prompt and thorough - Scheduling was seamless, with appointments consistently running on time - The hygienists were uniformly excellent The one significant caveat: My first appointment was with Dr. Nik, who had the worst bedside manner I've ever encountered in a dentist. Dr. Nik was unexpectedly unavailable for my second appointment, so I saw Dr. Shoji instead—and that's when I realized my initial negative experience wasn't representative of the practice as a whole. After that, I informed the practice that I would only be seen by Dr. Shoji and would not see Dr. Nik under any circumstances. If I had arrived for an appointment with Dr. Shoji and there had been a last-minute change with Dr. Nik there instead, I would have refused to be seen. The practice accommodated this without hesitation and seemed to understand without needing much explanation, which suggests I'm not alone in this experience. If you're considering this practice, I highly recommend it with one strong suggestion: request Dr. Shoji for your appointments. With the right dentist, you'll have an excellent experience at this office.
The best practice I've ever joined. The communication from this office is consistently excellent. The dentists take a long term perspective when advising treatments. They never push me to undergo any treatment that isn't truly necessary, but they do offer proactive management of problems at my discretion.
I joined as a new patient recently after years of avoiding the dentist because of frustrating and painful experiences, and this team has been the best I’ve ever had. The hygienists have been so nice and efficient and gentle and helpful. Dan in particular did a deep clean for me today and took my feedback about how long novocaine lasts for me really seriously and tried something different while still keeping me pain free. I feel great. The team at the front desk helping to schedule appointments and talk insurance were so transparent and kind and thoughtful. I can’t recommend them enough. I’m so glad I’ve got a dentist I can feel safe with.
