About Southbay Periodontics & Implantology

Based on Vail Ridge Drive in Riverview, Florida, Southbay Periodontics & Implantology is a dental practice serving the area. Gum disease treatment ranges from a deeper professional cleaning for early inflammation through to more involved periodontal care once bone around the teeth has started to be affected. Bleeding gums are usually the earliest sign, and the early stage is reversible with proper cleaning and better daily plaque control.

Digital X-rays are a routine part of dental care because they show what a visual exam alone cannot — decay forming between teeth, bone loss below the gumline, and how developing adult teeth are positioned in children. They use a low radiation dose and are taken on a schedule matched to individual risk rather than at every single visit.

Left untreated, small dental problems tend not to stay small. A minor cavity that would have been a straightforward filling can progress to needing root canal treatment and a crown, and early gum inflammation that would have reversed with a good cleaning can progress toward bone loss around the teeth. Catching things early is generally the difference in both effort and cost.

Continuity matters in dental care — seeing the same practice over time means your history, X-rays, and any patterns in your oral health are already on file, rather than starting from scratch at each visit. That familiarity is part of what a regular dental home offers beyond any single appointment.

Dental anxiety is common, and most practices are used to working with nervous patients — through clear explanations of what is about to happen, a slower pace where needed, and sedation options for patients who want them. Avoiding the dentist out of anxiety tends to make eventual treatment more involved, not less.

Children benefit from starting dental visits early, generally by their first birthday or within six months of the first tooth coming through, mainly so they become familiar with the setting before any treatment is actually needed. Establishing that routine early tends to make ongoing checkups far less stressful for both child and parent. Why do my gums bleed even though I brush twice a day?
Bleeding usually reflects where you are cleaning rather than how often. Plaque left along the gumline and between teeth causes inflammation there, which is exactly the area brushing alone tends to miss, so flossing or interdental brushes matter.
What are the early signs of gum disease?
Gums that bleed when brushing or flossing, redness and puffiness along the gumline, and persistent bad breath are the usual first indicators. Bleeding is the one most often dismissed, and it is the clearest early warning.
How often should I have a dental check-up?
Every six months suits most people. If you have gum disease or a history of decay a dentist may suggest coming more often. The point of regular visits is mostly to catch problems while they are still small and cheap to treat.

Dr. Geist and his amazing staff are both professional and compassionate and highly skilled. I was rather nervous about going, but they all made me feel very comfortable about my dental exam and were very thorough about the upcoming procedure and went over exactly what needed and would be fine all in one visit. I felt, from the start, I was and will be in good hands. This is a very professional, skilled team of individuals, who will be recommended in the future! The are unlike any “big box” places around the Apollo Beach / Riverview area that overcharge you for services you don’t need. I am so glad I was recommended to this professional dentist!

I had concerns about my sore gums so I explained my situation to the receptionist and she was able to schedule an appointment for me to see Dr. Gist right away. Dr Gist examined me and explained to me what was going on with my gums in a way I could easily understand. Luckily everything was fine and I’m glad I went saw Dr. Gist. He is very nice and trustworthy. The front desk staff is friendly and compassionate. Thank you!
