Southern Arizona Periodontics

My regular Dentist ( Dr Michael Allen) referred me to Dr Sharpe. I went to Dr Sharpe for 6 appointments and after spending $ 600 plus, nothing was really done with regard to my Periodontal situation. Ex Rays were taken several times, and my teeth were cleaned once, but that was it. I was told that I had an abscess on my left jaw on top of my left back tooth, and the back tooth needed to be pullout, but nothing more then that. I asked Dr Sharpe when was she going to pull the tooth and her reply was that she needed Dr. Allens input as to what to do. In effect nothing was done. I went to another Periodontist in another city and after more Ex Rays were taken, it was revealed that three teeth needed to be taken out. At this point, I am ready to seek legal help in getting my money back as nothing substantial was done.

tldr- Dr Sharp and her medical team at Southern Arizona Periodontics are great. But don't trust that the estimate will be close to what they will actually charge you. Dr. Sharp is very skilled and the medical team is wonderful. Surgery went smoothly and I'm pretty happy with the results. My issue is with billing. The procedure was expensive, and I paid my estimated responsibility the day of the surgery. 6 weeks later I got a bill for almost 2k additional, which is nearly 75% more compared to what I had already paid. There was no explanation accompanying this new statement. I called the office quite frustrated, and they blamed insurance (generally believable), and explained that they did not have the updated explanation of benefits when they provided the estimate. Since I was very upset, they offered a 1k discount. But it still felt off, and I decided to puzzle it out. Looking at the differences between the estimate and the claim, it was clear that ~1/3 of the additional charges were due to increased insurance allowances, annoying, but it is what it is and the insurance is paying out at the rate they should be. The other ~2/3 came from increases to line items that insurance doesn't cover, and weren't expected to cover. The office explained that the insurance company made them charge the new price for those line items (for example - going from $183 to $671), whereas insurance verbally stated that the office was under no obligation to charge that much. Again the office did give me a 1k discount, but that didn't bring down the charges to the original estimate for the line items that were in no way covered by insurance. I don't think what they're doing is illegal, but it sure seems unethical. I cancelled a follow-up appointment, because they lost my trust. Key takeaway: get a predetermination, so you can make a well informed decision whether to work with this office and avoid surprises.

Every time I come to this office I am very impressed with the entire operation. The front desk staff are excellent, the environment is clean and relaxing. Tina, the woman who provides care to my gums and performs cleaning every 6 months, is an absolute gem. She is kind and professional and shows true care for her patients. HIghly recommended!

I had a great experience with the staff at Southern Arizona Periodontists. They were very patient with me and made the procedure as painless as possible. They listened to my concerns and made sure to put me at ease, the best they could with dental surgery. The staff is so friendly and kind and even make sure to stop by and say hi during your follow up appointments. They even made sure to fit me in for a 'special' follow up appointment when I had additional questions regarding the healing process. Thank you!!

If you’re someone who gets nervous about going to the dentist, this review is for you. I genuinely do not like anything about going to the dentist, but from the second I walked into Dr. Sharp’s office, I felt safe and comfortable. That alone says everything. I felt listened to and respected. Stephanie, Dr. Sharp’s assistant, answered every single question I had with patience and kindness. And both Stephanies — the receptionist and the assistant — were absolutely wonderful. Professional, compassionate, and genuinely caring. This was hands down the best dental experience I’ve ever had. I would recommend Dr. Sharp and her team without hesitation.

Dr. Sharp, her Hygienist Tina, and her wonderful receptionist Stephanie are the absolute best team ever! We moved from Tucson to Tempe in 2021 and we have never missed an apt yet! We come every 3 months and it's like visiting family each time! The 2 hour drive is nothing to get the best care possible! We really look forward to it!
