About Southern Dental Birmingham

Southern Dental Birmingham sits on Valleydale Road in the southern Birmingham suburbs, in the corridor between Hoover and Pelham where the residential developments stretch out from the city's southern edge. The patient base is the surrounding Hoover, Pelham, and southern Birmingham metro community — families with kids, working professionals, and the longtime suburban homeowners who anchor the area's stable residential blocks.

Routine fillings make up a steady share of the schedule. The team uses tooth-colored composite as the default for most cases, handling single-surface and multi-surface restorations, replacement fillings when older work has failed, and the call between filling and crown when more tooth structure has been compromised. Beyond fillings, services include cleanings and exams, root canals, crowns and bridges, extractions, gum-disease screening, teeth whitening, and emergency dental care. They'll review prior X-rays when patients bring records from a previous practice, which gives the diagnostic call more context than starting fresh.

If you've been driving across the metro for the dentist out of habit, a closer practice in the southern suburbs can cut the round-trip and make six-month recalls easier to actually keep.

Patients searching for general dentistry in Birmingham, AL, family dentist in Birmingham, or affordable family dental care in Birmingham who live in Hoover, Pelham, or south Birmingham often choose Valleydale-corridor practices for the suburb-local convenience. Southern Dental fits that pattern. The new-patient exam combines comprehensive radiographs, periodontal screening, and a treatment-plan walkthrough before any restorative work is scheduled. For southern metro families picking a regular general dental practice, this Valleydale Road office is a sensible first appointment. Bringing prior X-rays and treatment records from a previous dentist usually saves a redundant imaging round at the new-patient exam and gives the team baseline context to compare against current findings. Six-month recall scheduling is the strongest predictor of which patients catch problems early, and most practices will book the next visit before you leave the current one if you ask while you're checking out.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is Southern Dental Birmingham located in Birmingham?
Southern Dental Birmingham is on Valleydale Road in Birmingham, Alabama (35242).
What days is Southern Dental Birmingham open?
Southern Dental Birmingham is open Monday through Thursday. Contact the practice through this page to confirm current appointment times before travelling.
What services does Southern Dental Birmingham offer?
Listed services at Southern Dental Birmingham include Cosmetic Dentistry, Root Canal Treatment, Emergency Dentistry, Dental Crowns and Dental Bridges. The full list is shown on this page.
What should I do if a tooth gets knocked out?
Pick the tooth up by the crown rather than the root, rinse it gently without scrubbing, and try to place it back in the socket. If that is not possible, keep it in milk and get to a dentist quickly — the chances of saving it drop sharply after the first hour.
How do I stop tooth pain until I can see a dentist?
Over-the-counter anti-inflammatory painkillers usually help more than paracetamol for dental pain, a cold compress against the cheek reduces swelling, and a warm salt-water rinse can ease irritation. None of these treat the cause, so they are a bridge to an appointment rather than a fix.
Does getting a crown hurt?
Preparing the tooth is done under local anaesthetic, so the appointment itself should not be painful. Some tenderness and temperature sensitivity in the following days is normal, particularly if the tooth had a lot of work done.

As I sat in the office the thought that came to my mind was professional. A staff so patient, kind, and they take time to speak to you about any problems you have and help you develop a solution. Everyone that I spoke to was helpful and courteous. I will not go to another dentist.

First time vidit. Dr Maddox and his staff were amazing with my dad and working with us, getting us in quickly, and went above and beyond. The care, the professionalism, the atmosphere, everything was perfect. The patience and care from Dr. Maddox and Lauren were unmatchable! Thank you and your staff for all you do!

Dr. Smith was amazing. I came in looking for special advice and he helped me find a specialist for my situation. I’ll definitely be back for a routine cleaning due to his honesty and integrity.

I came to Southern Dental after having a traumatic experience with a botched dental procedure at another practice in town. Dr. Maddox and his team gave me all the kindness and reassurance I needed emotionally as well as saved my tooth, which the other practice said I should just remove completely (after they messed it up in the first place). The people at Southern Dental are the real deal. Not only are they professionals, but they truly care about every single patient that walks in the door! I’m in my 40s and I’ve never had a better dental experience than at Southern Dental.

This was my first experience to see Dr. Maddox for dental work. He did an amazing job replacing an old crown that had chipped and replacing it with a new crown. I’m so glad that he realized my old crown had a hole in it, was able to remove all the decay, rebuild the tooth, and crown it. I went to an excellent dentist for 30 years who retired. I’m so glad to finally find a new dentist and feel confident Dr. Maddox will do excellent work as well!

Even though going to the dentist isn’t always fun, the Hygienist and dentist at Southern Dental make the trip less painful! They are so nice and very competent!
