Most implants are titanium; zirconia is a ceramic alternative with no metal component, so nothing grey shows through when gum tissue is thin or recedes later, and some patients choose it over concerns about metal in the body. It is not automatically the better option. Zirconia carries a shorter clinical track record, comes in fewer diameters and lengths, and one-piece designs leave a surgeon less room to correct an awkward implant angle when the restoration is made.

Implant-supported overdentures address a different problem: a conventional denture rests on the gum ridge, relies on suction, lifts when you chew, and lets the ridge slowly resorb underneath it. An overdenture snaps onto attachments carried by implants set into the jaw, which anchors it and restores far more biting force while still coming out for cleaning at night. How many implants an arch needs comes down to bone height and shape, which a scan settles and a phone call cannot. Most patients here arrive on referral and return to their own dentist for cleanings, fillings and the crown or bridge that eventually sits on the implant.
