About Sunshine Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics

Sunshine Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics provides dental care on West Sunset Road in the San Antonio International Airport Vicinity area of San Antonio, Texas. Pediatric dental care is built around treating children specifically — dentists with additional training in child development and behaviour management, and offices designed to make a first visit unintimidating. Guidance generally points to a child's first dental visit around age one or within six months of the first tooth.

Orthodontic treatment straightens teeth and corrects bite problems using braces, clear aligners, or similar appliances over a period that commonly runs from about a year to several years depending on the case. It is offered to both children, where early evaluation can catch developing issues, and adults at any age.

Dental anxiety is common, and most practices are used to working with nervous patients — through clear explanations of what is about to happen, a slower pace where needed, and sedation options for patients who want them. Avoiding the dentist out of anxiety tends to make eventual treatment more involved, not less.

Children benefit from starting dental visits early, generally by their first birthday or within six months of the first tooth coming through, mainly so they become familiar with the setting before any treatment is actually needed. Establishing that routine early tends to make ongoing checkups far less stressful for both child and parent.

Payment and insurance arrangements vary by practice and by treatment, so it is worth asking directly what is covered and what options exist for anything that is not, rather than assuming either way. Getting that clarified before treatment starts avoids surprises once it is underway.

Beyond any single treatment, most dental visits start with an examination — checking for decay, reviewing the gums, and looking at existing fillings or crowns — often alongside X-rays where there is a reason to look between or beneath teeth. That groundwork is what a dentist uses to explain any findings and set out next steps before you leave. This page has the practice's contact details and full service list. We have been going here for years, the previous Orthodontist was great, but left to open her own practice. Since our insurance was used here, we had to stay. My daughter has had two appointments back to back cancelled. We live an hour and a half away. This is ridiculous. For her broken brackets, we would have to schedule an “emergency visit” and then a visit with the ortho. We love an hour and a half away. She wasn’t supposed to be seen for years. She developed a cross bite from the poor adjustment of her braces. I don’t recommend this place.

The actual dental and orthodontic work here has been fine so far. Unfortunately, the communication and administrative side have been consistently frustrating. For weeks I told them my son had orthodontic coverage, but they kept giving me estimates showing none. I finally called Delta myself and learned the office had been running the wrong state for our plan, despite me providing the information multiple times. Once corrected, I also noticed the underlying treatment price had changed from the original estimate before insurance was even applied, leaving my final cost almost as high as the original quote without coverage. Nobody clearly explained why. This is a pattern. Estimates have been incorrect, changed, or missing fees, and appointments routinely take far longer than necessary because we’re sorting out administrative issues. I’m fortunate I can handle unexpected costs at the last minute, but many families cannot. The most frustrating experience was my son’s braces. I repeatedly told the administrative staff he wanted clear braces, and they clearly understood that was what we expected. After his braces were placed, we realized they were metal. The person placing them never confirmed the type with us, and the dentist said she hadn’t been told. Only afterward did the dentist explain that because of his overbite, he could only have clear brackets on top. That was never explained during his consultation. She also said we were supposed to review our choice directly with her before placement, which nobody had ever told us. Patients shouldn’t be expected to know which individual employee needs to receive information. The office needs a system for communicating treatment choices internally. We’ve had other similar issues, including recently being told he needed an extraction evaluation he’d already completed. I’ve also been bothered by Juanita repeatedly mispronouncing my other son’s name. Mispronouncing it initially is understandable. Having him correct her and then immediately repeating the wrong pronunciation anyway comes across as dismissive and disrespectful. We spent more than two hours here during a school day for the braces appointment, much of it dealing with issues that could have been prevented with basic communication. Now we’re expected to return to correct the braces. I genuinely hope things improve because we’re here for a two year orthodontic treatment, and I’ll gladly update this review if they do. I also hope leaving an honest review doesn’t result in more passive aggressive treatment. I don’t want a negative relationship with anyone here. I just want accurate information, clear communication, and respect for our time and treatment choices.

My daughter had her dental exam here, and it went great. I forgot the name of the lady that helped do the x rays and cleaning, but she was great with my daughter. It was the first time she let anyone takes all the x rays. This beautiful lady took her time with my almost 5 year daughter, and I could tell she loves her job and is great with kids.

First visit here. I’m so grateful they were able to squeeze us in very last minute when no one else would. They removed a loose metal spacer that was causing a lot of pain for my daughter. They were super busy but the office staff was amazing and worked super hard to keep everything running smoothly.

Took my 5 yr old for the 1st time to the dentist. She panicks a lot with doctor's visits and this was not exception. She barely let them clean her teeth, she was not having it. The staff & dentist were very understanding and empathetic, did not force anything on her. We'll definitely return, & hopefully next will be successful.

First time patient. Jeniffer was great at front desk during checkout. Jenna did my daughter’s cleaning and was quick and efficient. Dr. Stell was awesome. Definitely found our permanent dentist!

This was a very sensory friendly environment and all the staff was amazing. My son is autistic and they understood his limitations and were very patient and understanding towards him. They treated him like a person, not an inconvenience like the place I took him prior. I would recommend this office for any child and if I could give a higher star rating I would because they deserve it.
