About Sunshine Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics
Sunshine Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics provides dental care on West Sunset Road in the San Antonio International Airport Vicinity area of San Antonio, Texas. Pediatric dental care is built around treating children specifically — dentists with additional training in child development and behaviour management, and offices designed to make a first visit unintimidating. Guidance generally points to a child's first dental visit around age one or within six months of the first tooth.
Orthodontic treatment straightens teeth and corrects bite problems using braces, clear aligners, or similar appliances over a period that commonly runs from about a year to several years depending on the case. It is offered to both children, where early evaluation can catch developing issues, and adults at any age.
Dental anxiety is common, and most practices are used to working with nervous patients — through clear explanations of what is about to happen, a slower pace where needed, and sedation options for patients who want them. Avoiding the dentist out of anxiety tends to make eventual treatment more involved, not less.
Children benefit from starting dental visits early, generally by their first birthday or within six months of the first tooth coming through, mainly so they become familiar with the setting before any treatment is actually needed. Establishing that routine early tends to make ongoing checkups far less stressful for both child and parent.
Payment and insurance arrangements vary by practice and by treatment, so it is worth asking directly what is covered and what options exist for anything that is not, rather than assuming either way. Getting that clarified before treatment starts avoids surprises once it is underway.
Beyond any single treatment, most dental visits start with an examination — checking for decay, reviewing the gums, and looking at existing fillings or crowns — often alongside X-rays where there is a reason to look between or beneath teeth. That groundwork is what a dentist uses to explain any findings and set out next steps before you leave. This page has the practice's contact details and full service list. Took my 5 yr old for the 1st time to the dentist. She panicks a lot with doctor's visits and this was not exception. She barely let them clean her teeth, she was not having it. The staff & dentist were very understanding and empathetic, did not force anything on her. We'll definitely return, & hopefully next will be successful.
My son is nonverbal and has autism. Coming here is really accommodating and nice to have people be compassionate like Savannah. This place has been great with both my boys
Everyone is awesome here. Very happy!!! Savannah and torry helped us well
This place is amazing! What I like most is that they give a lot of attention to children; everyone is very kind.
First time patient. Jeniffer was great at front desk during checkout. Jenna did my daughter’s cleaning and was quick and efficient. Dr. Stell was awesome. Definitely found our permanent dentist!
This was a very sensory friendly environment and all the staff was amazing. My son is autistic and they understood his limitations and were very patient and understanding towards him. They treated him like a person, not an inconvenience like the place I took him prior. I would recommend this office for any child and if I could give a higher star rating I would because they deserve it.
We had such a wonderful experience at Sunshine Pediatric Dentistry in Alamo Heights! I took my 3 1/2 year-old in for a checkup, and the staff did an amazing job making him feel comfortable and calm the entire visit. They were so gentle while taking his x-rays, brushing his teeth, and explaining everything they were doing step by step. The office was incredibly kid-friendly with toys, activities, and TVs to keep little ones entertained, and everyone we met was so warm and friendly. As new patients, we felt very welcomed and will absolutely continue coming here from now on!
I take both of my kids here and they do an amazing job! The waiting room is so fun for them, as well as the toys available for the babies. Karen, one of the dental hygienists, was such a delight today and we hope to keep coming here for a long time!
I’m not usually someone who takes the time to write reviews—life with school and kids keeps me busy—but this experience truly deserved one. From the moment we arrived for my children’s first dental appointment, it felt more like a fun field trip than a typical visit. The atmosphere is calm, welcoming, and beautifully designed in a way that immediately puts both kids and parents at ease. The staff were incredibly kind, patient, and genuinely helpful, which made the entire experience smooth and stress-free. My kids were absolutely amazed—it honestly felt like walking into the DoSeum with how engaging and kid-friendly everything was! I’m so impressed and grateful that our foster family chose this office. They’ve created such a thoughtful environment for children. Even the little details stand out—like the adorable children’s shop with tooth fairy items, fun toothbrushes, and toothpaste—perfect for making the visit feel special and exciting. Highly recommend to any family looking for a positive, kid-centered dental experience!
Staff knew the doctor wouldn't be in and allowed me to come. Staff knew I needed to have my sons tooth restored and chose to let us see someone who wasnt planning on helping anyway. No option was given to reschedule with my child's regular dentist. No option was given for treatment. An immediate referral out to a general practice. Stating the dentist present wasnt comfortable doing the work and was positive my son's regular dentist also didn't want to do it. So they allowed us to drive 45 mins charge me a copay and then charged for the referral and xrays to do nothing absolutely nothing. All of which could have been stated on the phone and not wasted my time or money. I requested a refund and was told that Joe A. the director of finance wasnt available to speak with as if he was the only one in the entire billing department. Kimberly C and Jennifer V. Refused to provide medical records and any signed paperwork. Refused to provide the notices and standard hipaa paperwork given at any doctor's visits. Office manager Refused to speak with me and no names or any information was planning on being given. I had to get loud to even get the receptionist name as she refused to uncover her name tag. The explanation given was "I dont know who you talked to." When I stated "you I spoke to you. Its on camera I just spoke to you!" She stated "oh I didnt know you needed to have restoration." I stated "im sorry when we spoke I stated I needed his tooth fixed today. And at no point did you say his dentist wasnt here. You stated that the dentist we were seeing was the only one in office that could do it. So knowledge was there." She then refused to speak any more. This office 100% owes me an apology and 50 dollars. Which doesnt include my time, which was 100% wasted. By far the absolute worst service Ive encounter from anyone in the medical field.
I normally don’t write reviews, but I feel like I need to share our experience. My son has been going to this office since he was baby and we’ve never had issues with the dental care itself. Unfortunately, the front office communication has been extremely disappointing. We’ve had two appointments canceled after already pulling my son out of school only to be told they couldn’t see him. On another occasion, they scheduled then rescheduled us for an earlier time with very little notice and we rearranged our schedule to make it work, arrived only a few minutes late due to just being notified and a accident I called to let them know they said it was fine and when we arrived 4 mins later mind you we were told they couldn’t see us. Another issue I have that upset me was that they kept referring to my child as female, even though I corrected them several times and reminded them before the appointment that he is male. Wasn’t trying to be to bothered about it till they continue to do it even right after I would tell them before the appointment and they kept on doing it. Mind you he’s been going there for years and I’ve mentioned this every time and try to correct it, but this just shows a complete lack of communication and understanding. The lack of communication and flexibility has wasted our time multiple times. It’s very frustrating, especially as a parent trying to manage school and schedules Sadly, the front desk experience has completely turned us away from coming back.
If you are a parent to a neurodivergent kiddo please be cautious of this place. I filled out paperwork and verbally told the lady cleaning my son's teeth that she needed to explain what was happening to him and she would not. Instead she scared him and made him cry while telling him not to cry and that he was ok. He was clearly not ok and she just continued without any sympathy for how he was feeling. We were bulldozed from the beginning of the appointment to the end. We were scheduled and expected to pay $2000 for dental work and no one stopped to ask if we even had the funds for this. They just put us on an appointment list for a month away. When I asked questions about billing I was told that I could call their other location for answers. Absolutely will not be returning. Even the dentist that came in had horrible bedside manner.
