About Tampa Smiles: John L. Redd II, DMD

Based on West Platt Street in the Hyde Park area of Tampa, Florida, Tampa Smiles: John L. Redd II, DMD is a dental practice serving the area. Periodontics is the specialty focused on the gums and the bone supporting the teeth, handling more advanced gum disease, related surgical treatment, and — in many practices — dental implant placement, which sits naturally alongside that training.

Children benefit from starting dental visits early, generally by their first birthday or within six months of the first tooth coming through, mainly so they become familiar with the setting before any treatment is actually needed. Establishing that routine early tends to make ongoing checkups far less stressful for both child and parent.

Payment and insurance arrangements vary by practice and by treatment, so it is worth asking directly what is covered and what options exist for anything that is not, rather than assuming either way. Getting that clarified before treatment starts avoids surprises once it is underway.

Beyond any single treatment, most dental visits start with an examination — checking for decay, reviewing the gums, and looking at existing fillings or crowns — often alongside X-rays where there is a reason to look between or beneath teeth. That groundwork is what a dentist uses to explain any findings and set out next steps before you leave.

Routine attendance, roughly every six months for most people, is what actually keeps small problems small. A lot of decay and gum disease develops without any pain in its early stages, which is why regular checkups matter even when nothing seems to be wrong, rather than only booking an appointment once something hurts.

A first appointment at a new practice typically covers a full examination, a review of your dental and medical history, and a professional cleaning, with X-rays if you do not have recent ones. It is also a reasonable time to raise any longer-term concerns, cosmetic or otherwise, so they can be factored into a plan going forward. Can a periodontist save a loose tooth?
Sometimes. If the looseness comes from bone loss around the tooth, deep cleaning and periodontal treatment can stabilise it, though the outcome depends on how much support has already been lost.
Do periodontists place dental implants?
Many do, since implant placement sits naturally alongside their training in the gum and bone that support teeth. Whether a specific practice offers it is worth confirming directly.
Is it normal for teeth to be sensitive to cold?
Mild, brief sensitivity is common and often relates to exposed root surfaces or worn enamel. Sensitivity that lingers after the cold is removed is more significant and worth having examined, as it can indicate the nerve is involved.

I’ve been Dr Redd’s patient for more than 25 years. He and his team provide outstanding dental care with the latest technology in a first class office. Most important to me, Dr Redd is always there in an emergency situation with his personal care.

Dr. Redd and his entire team are incredible. Denise and Vanessa are rock stars, and the dental hygienists are always lovely and kind. Dr. Redd provides exceptional patient care — I truly appreciate them all. The practice is both professional and efficient. They use advanced technology for crowns, work quickly, and communicate clearly throughout treatment. I especially value that Dr. Redd focuses on preserving as much of the natural tooth as possible and personally follows up after procedures to ensure comfort. At 50 years old, I’ve had my share of dental issues, and Dr. Redd has handled every situation thoughtfully and effectively. He is honest, kind, and caring, while also working with impressive speed and precision. His follow-up and responsiveness are outstanding. This is the best dental practice in the Tampa Bay area. There are quite literally not enough words to express my gratitude to Dr Redd, Denise, and the rest of the staff. I was in an awful dental situation where most places threw 30-40k at me and let me walk away. I went into Dr Redds office crying, scared, and embarrassed and left feeling valued, understood, confident in my decision, and not financially drained. They give you options and understand the human aspect of life rather than just the money and in and out feeling you get from most places. He Lewinsky texts you after your appointment to check on you 😭❤️ If I could give more than 5 stars I would. My family and friends now go to Dr Redd as well. Take your dental health seriously and start that journey with his office!!! If he can't fix it, he knows who can! Thank you all so much for everything you've done to help me get through this process.

I HIGHLY recommend Dr. Redd and his OUTSTANDING staff! The staff is extremely knowledgeable and welcoming! The office is impeccably clean, with all of the latest dental technology. Dr. Redd always answers my questions thoroughly and with extreme detail. I have never been a fan of the dentist, and I get tremendous anxiety knowing that I have to have anything done other than a normal check-up and dental cleaning. Recently, I had a dental procedure that required novocaine and drill work. Dr. Redd and his staff were aware of my nerves, so they put on relaxing music. Also, Dr. Redd offered me a wonderfully relaxing massaging eye mask. I have never felt so cared for and accommodated while under a doctor's care. The best part of going to Dr. Redd's office is the homemade chocolate chip cookies that are available in the front lobby for all patients!!! KUDOS to Dr. Redd and his staff!
