Tufts University School of Dental Medicine (TUSDM) is one of the nation’s leading dental schools, located at 1 Kneeland Street in Boston’s Chinatown/Downtown area. TUSDM operates a patient care clinic where dental students, supervised by licensed faculty dentists, provide a broad range of dental services to the public at reduced fees compared to private practice rates in the 02111 zip code.
General dental care at the TUSDM clinic covers a comprehensive range of services including examinations, professional cleanings, X-rays, and preventive treatments such as fluoride and sealants. Students work under direct faculty supervision at all times, and cases are reviewed and confirmed by attending faculty before treatment proceeds. The clinical environment is set up for thorough, methodical care.
Restorative and more complex dental services are also available, including fillings, crowns, root canal treatment, periodontal therapy, and dentures. The breadth of services reflects the educational scope of the school’s clinical training program. Patients benefit from access to a wide range of dental services within a single facility, often at fees lower than those at private specialty practices.
New patients at TUSDM should expect longer appointment times compared to private practice, as the student-supervised model involves additional documentation and faculty review at each stage of treatment. Patients who require efficient scheduling or have time constraints should factor this into their decision. The trade-off is access to thorough care and comprehensive services at a dental school clinic.
The Kneeland Street address in Chinatown is served by the MBTA at Chinatown Station on the Orange Line and is near South Station on the Red and Silver lines. The campus is a hub of dental education and research for the greater Boston area and New England.

The receptionist are very loud and gossip which is typical but still unprofessional. However I love my dentist, prepare yourself for multiple appointments. I say if you need an emergency appointment go to your local dentist for a quick filling then come here. I saved thousands of dollars because my regular dentist tried forcing procedures on me that weren’t necessary. Do your research, oral hygiene affects your overall health!
I highly recommend that you get your worst enemies an appointment here ASAP. This place feels like it was carefully curated to mess with your head. You go through tonnes of stupid appointments because a student needs to get your "history" and develop your "treatment plan", but then if you visit them after a while, you are assigned a new student and the whole process starts over. Students perform irreplaceable processes before looking at your treatment plan, and everything changes again. Unless you plan to visit Tufts 10-20 times per year, please look somewhere else. You will hate yourself for taking the cheaper option and being treated like a lab rat.
Great place to go if you are looking to get teeth work done.
I love and trust this dental school. They always had an appointment- always open- cutting edge tech and reasonable prices
I had a really positive experience getting a considerable amount of dental work done at Tufts, extractions, a root canal, 2 implants, 3 gold crowns and a second opinion on past dental work from another dentist. My (student) doctors were really kind and considerate about my sensory issues. They went above and beyond to deliver quality care. It helped me save a lot of money, and even though I paid out of pocket, I was able to get some money back by putting in an insurance claim. It also helps that the faculty is highly experienced and supportive to the student doctors. They addressed any concerns that I had. The students also work in teams, which offers multiple opinions on some things. I now have treated teeth, a restored smile, as well as restored faith in good quality, kind dentists.
I have been going to this clinic since I was a child and I love it. Not only is it cost friendly but these students are excellent, educated and they genuinely care. My past dentist told me I needed a root canal, the specialist denied and yet my dentist still wanted me to get the root canal done. However tufts is now doing a completely different treatment plan, always get a second opinion and advocate for your health! The appointments will be longer but pleasant, 10/10.
I have been very impressed with the care and thoroughness of the students involved in my care. I can honestly say, I leave each visit with an understanding of that visit, an understanding of the treatment plan and an understanding of what comes next. I appreciate the level of detail so much so that my dental student, saw things my previous dentist missed at a visit just a few months earlier! I left that practice because I was never confident in the treatment and the ridiculous fees and thought I’d give Tufts a try. I am so happy I did. The students are professional, knowledgeable and caring and attentive. Their supervisors follow up leaving me feeling very comfortable with the students competence.
This is an amazing place for the entire Boston-New England area! A few years ago, my wife had a horrible infection in her mouth/jaw over a weekend. We went to Boston Medical as they have a 24hr dental dr available [via Tufts Dental] almost across the street. After hrs of pain, the dr was able to administer the correct meds and assess the infection - it was under a tooth! She was well medicated, and the pain ended almost immediately after the tooth was pulled and the infected area removed! Hallelujah!!
