About UAB Dentistry
UAB Dentistry is the patient-care arm of the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Dentistry, sitting on 7th Avenue South in the Five Points South medical-campus district. Care here is delivered by supervised dental students and residents under the direct oversight of licensed faculty dentists — a different model from a private practice. Visits take longer because the work is being learned and checked, but the cost is substantially lower for routine fillings, cleanings, and basic restorative care for patients without strong dental insurance.
Cavity treatment is one of the most common procedures here. Students handle tooth-colored composite fillings under faculty review, with the supervising dentist signing off on the diagnostic call, the cavity preparation, and the final restoration. The clinic covers single-surface and multi-surface fillings, replacement work when an old filling has failed, and the kind of routine restorative dentistry that fits the curriculum. Beyond fillings, services include cleanings, exams, root canals, crowns and bridges, extractions, dentures, and basic restorative work — all delivered through the same teaching model and at reduced fees relative to private practice.
If you've been quoted a number for a filling at a private dentist that doesn't fit your budget, a screening visit at the teaching clinic will tell you whether the same work can be done through the supervised student program.
Patients searching for affordable family dental care in Birmingham, family dentist in Birmingham, or routine dental care in Birmingham who are price-sensitive often start at teaching clinics like this one. The tradeoffs are honest — longer chair time, the academic-calendar scheduling rhythm, and the slightly less polished bedside manner of supervised students. For uninsured Birmingham residents, students themselves, and anyone whose budget makes private-practice fees difficult, this Five Points South UAB teaching clinic is the affordable starting point. Birmingham's metro dental capacity tightens and loosens by season — if the practice isn't accepting new patients on first call, asking about a waitlist position is worth the two minutes before moving on to other options. It's worth asking whether the practice files insurance directly or expects payment up front and reimbursement separately, because the answer materially shifts how much you pay out of pocket on the visit day.
UAB Dentistry is the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Dentistry's teaching clinic in Five Points South, where supervised dental students provide routine care including fillings at reduced fees.

Worst experience ever at UAB school of Dentistry. My child had an appointment at 10:30 am. We get in there one of the students did X-rays on my child teeth mind you she was suppose come back on the 8th of August to get her tooth filled per her last Doctor at the same office. They took X-rays and say she may need a root canal. They sent upstairs to the 5th floor to get more x-rays they said she does not need a root canal which I already knew. Mind you my child is still in pain and there was nothing they could her not even give her a prescription for pain. We were there from 10:30 this morning until 3:00 this afternoon. I forgot to mention we live an hour away and they did NOTHING. One of the doctors ask what do you want me to do. Fix the problem is what I wanted them to do.
I can't speak for others but my experience here was amazing! I had oral surgery at the UAB School of Dentistry on July 20th, and I want to highly recommend the student oral surgeon, Makayla! She was incredibly caring, patient, amazing, and made my entire procedure and recovery process feel so much easier. Thank you for your wonderful care!
Update 7/24/26 to say my tooth has abcessed from infection because UAB has brushed me off for months for a follow up appointment since I came in on 5/4/26 for tooth pain in an old crown and all they did was take xrays and say they were gonna call me to come in for the rest of the comprehensive exam and they wanted to push me off until almost Septemper. I was told it has a cavity and needs to be cleaned out & re-crowned & they would call me when they have an available appointment. I have kept in touch and they still havent had available appointments and wont until at least the very end of August while the pain in my tooth gets worse. So I pretty much just wasted money(&time) since now I have to find a dentist that actually has open appointments.
I had a great experience going to the school for an emergency root canal July 1, 2026. It was an easy sign in be sure to have all information in a hand they aren’t able to take anything virtually. You will have a copay and they will see you and promptly. I was on the first floor for emergency and be sure to get there and sign in as early as you can (7:30-10:30 or 12:30-2:30) spots fill up quickly! The receptionist was prompt with getting you in the system and nice. Going you must have realistic expectations you are working with students who are limited with treatment as a private dentist. They have certain requirements and steps they must follow. This is a great opportunity for affordable dental care along with helping students get practice for their future. I went in scared they would see me and send me home but luckily Nate Williams (could be wrong on the last name) helped me get a referral for a same day root canal which is rare because they are normally by appointment and booked. I was seen and able to start my 2 step treatment with Dr. Oliver Chan. He was wonderful and explained everything I was doing which really made me less nervous. The process was pretty quick even with the stress of my tooth wouldn’t numb and he did not want to just keep giving me medicine saying that I still had to come back for part 2 anyway. He cleaned everything he could that didn’t cause me pain and sealed my tooth shut and I will return back to finish treatment. I will say again do not go here if you are inpatient or in a rush that results in you being rude to the staff they are working as fast as they can with their limits and they are all so nice and helpful! Remember they are still learning! I must say I had a great overall experience!
After 30 years UAB School of Dentistry is the only place I enjoy getting Dental Work done. I've tried other locations but I always return it feels like home. I will recommend it highly to anyone who needs a Dentist. The Student Doctors Nora on Wednesday & Ashton on Friday both brought my smile back to life. Miss Tina greeted me with care and concern each time we spoke and Dr. Chin provided the Student Doctors with great professional advice. Last week was a beautiful experience.
Very nice facilities. I am disappointed about the trips I took. The first visit was quick and simple but pointless. They made me pay $70 to tell me they couldn't do anything for me I had to see a specialist. I requested a refund, they literally saw me 5 minutes and did nothing but they wouldn't. Then I came to see the specialist. I am wanting to get implants. I went here specifically hoping the price would be a little cheaper seeing how it's a school. I knew it would still cost a good bit but they were they same price as the dentist in my hometown. Same price as dentist that have been practicing 20 years! I live in Huntsville, I have to take the day off to go to a dentist appt in B'ham, it's a all day affair! UAB doesn't realize or care the effort to get to a appt there, then charge $70 for nothing or charge $30k for implants from a student! Needless to say I won't be back. This may be the place for you for simple or routine dentist appointments.
I have had an abscess for 3 days and antibiotics weren't working. I walked in at 7:30am and everyone was super helpful. My entry time was 7:37am and by 9 they had already pulled me back and evaluated my teeth. It was $47 for the exam and X-ray. The student took me up to oral surgery and got me in line for removing 2 teeth that were severely infected at the roots. For extraction the prices can vary from$85-$125. Basically if it's harder and they have to grab extra tools it's going to cost a little more. The students that handled me were so kind and knowledgeable. I'll definitely be going to get the rest of my work done there. I was done by 11:30am and headed home.
I had two wisdom teeth pulled, as a 31 year old adult, and after they spent hours tearing my teeth out and leaving me swollen, they gave me nothing to deal with the pain. The over the counter ibuprofen clearly wasn’t enough, I woke up in screaming pain. I called back to explain I needed real pain medicine after having two wisdom teeth violently extracted and they said over the phone “sorry but what we gave you was plenty” …. They even handed me a piece of paper saying if my pain was bad enough to call back…. So I did and they got snarky, condescending and hung up on me when I called back. I can’t imagine anyone, anywhere, EVER having ANY wisdom teeth surgery like this and getting nothing but ibuprofen So now I have to go to the ER and hope someone else takes this pain seriously or I guess I’ll be in a lot of pain until this heals in a couple weeks! On top of all of this they were LATE to start my appointment , the entire staff, and because I got there early I was chewed out and lectured. Despite being let in and told my surgery was 30 minutes ago. NIGHTMARE PLACE, poor Dr. skills, poor customer service, poor pain management after poor dental skill (major surgery) and finally poor follow up I would give this place a negative 1 if I could, because I was treated like a piece of meat they ya led on and they didn’t give a crap what I felt like after. To the point of being confrontational and rude. DO NOT GET WISDOM TEETH PULLED HERE THEY WILL NOT PROPERLY SUPPORT YOU, EVEN THOUGH THEY TAKE OATHS TO TREAT YOU correctly before surgery, during and after surgery. They have failed me In every way and I am left in so much pain and disappointment and anger when I should be properly healing in PEACE.
I had a wisdom tooth extraction here, and the resident who did the extraction lacked bedside manners. As someone who works in healthcare, it is not normal to dismiss your patients concerns, nor is it normal to leave a patient unattended on nitrous oxide for over 20 minutes. Though I feel the procedure itself went okay, I feel my concerns were left dismissed. I don’t think I would come back here for a procedure like this, would only recommend for teeth cleanings and such. I understand everyone here is still learning, however, bedside manners and kindness is something we all should have learned early on, especially in a field surrounded by anxious patients. Everyone else before this procedure was great! The student who did my x rays and consultation was very nice and understanding and did a great job!
First time at this clinic, and I had an amazing experience. The staff, students, and doctors were all incredibly kind and welcoming. The consult process was smooth, and I was able to get all four of my wisdom teeth removed the very next day. I want to give special recognition to Laura and Dr. Griffin on the 4th floor. I hadn’t been to the dentist in a couple of years due to fear of oral tools, but Laura made the entire appointment feel easy and comfortable. She’s relatable, genuine, sweet, and truly caring. Her professionalism and character immediately built trust, and even during the extraction, her reassurance gave me confidence that everything was going to be okay. Dr. Griffin was equally amazing—watching the way he led his team was refreshing to see in a medical setting. I honestly couldn’t be happier with my experience at UAB. I even spoke with other patients in the waiting room and heard nothing but great things. Absolutely worth the 2-hour drive.
