University-affiliated teaching clinic, supervised care

UB Dental is the patient-care arm of the University at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine, sitting on Main Street in University Heights. Care here is delivered by supervised dental students and residents under the direct oversight of licensed faculty dentists, which is a different model from a private practice. Visits take longer because the work is being learned and checked, but the cost is substantially lower — for routine fillings and basic restorative care, this is genuinely the most affordable path in the Buffalo metro for patients without strong dental insurance.
Cavity treatment is one of the most common procedures here. Students handle tooth-colored composite fillings under faculty review, with the supervising dentist signing off on the diagnostic call, the cavity preparation, and the final restoration. The clinic covers single-surface and multi-surface fillings, replacement work when an old filling fails, and the kind of routine restorative dentistry that makes up the curriculum. Beyond fillings, services include cleanings, exams, extractions, root canal treatment, dentures, and crowns — all delivered through the same teaching model and at reduced fees.
If you've been quoted a number for a filling at a private practice that doesn't fit your budget, a screening visit here will tell you whether the same work can be done through the teaching clinic.
Patients searching for cavity filling near me in Buffalo, tooth-colored fillings in Buffalo, NY, or composite filling cost in Buffalo who are price-sensitive often start here. The tradeoffs are honest — longer chair time, the possibility of a slightly less polished bedside manner, and scheduling that runs on the academic calendar. For uninsured Buffalo residents and students themselves, this University Heights teaching clinic is the affordable starting point. Walk-in availability is usually limited because students' schedules are tied to academic terms, so calling ahead and being prepared to come in during the day matters here more than at a private practice. The savings versus private-practice fees are typically the largest in the region for routine restorative work.
UB Dental is the University at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine's teaching clinic in University Heights, where supervised dental students provide routine care including fillings at reduced fees compared with private practice.

I participated in the veterans day of smiles event on March 6 2026. I was very happy with the entire experience. The staff and students were very professional and very thorough. I would go here for my dental care.
*this review applies to people with healthy teeth seeking cleaning/maintenance and not necessarily to advanced dental work/fillings/drilling/etc.* I did not have a good experience here. First and foremost, this is advertised as a low-cost alternative to traditional dentistry. However, once you add up the cost of all the required exams and services, it's actually more expensive than a regular dentist. I do not have dental insurance, and the cost of an exam and cleaning with x-rays at UB is $160. What they don't tell you is that they require x-rays at each 6-month exam (you can't just get a cleaning without them) so the YEARLY cost of maintenance at this dental SCHOOL is $320. That is actually MORE than it costs to get an ACTUAL DENTIST (you can get semi-annual cleanings and x-rays with exams for $275/year at one local dentist that is currently taking new patients). This does NOT include the cost of missed work, which is significant, because each appointment requires you to carve out an entire half-day block of your time, and it's THREE appointments before you can get your FIRST cleaning (12 hours of missed work or wasted PTO, if you're counting). If you're still fine with all that, remember, it is students (children, basically) that are doing your dental work, not licensed doctors. The professors there are supervising so many students at once that they are really not able to pay much attention to each patient. They treat you like they are doing YOU a favor by letting you be there. The emphasis is on the learning experience for the student, NOT on the quality of your care. A short list of things that have happened to me in my 4 visits: - was gaslit by a professor/attending doctor who told me I had had cavities/caps/fillings in the past because he could "see them" (I have NEVER had a cavity, cap, or filling. You'd think I'd know that - the student was not able to floss my teeth, because they are close together (I can floss them just fine) - the student did a poor job cleaning and was told to do it again over 4 separate times by the attending professor, resulting in me enduring an hours-long cleaning with bad results and tons of scraping on my enamel - I was scolded like a child for refusing x-rays when I didn't need them and couldn't afford them. The professors told me that it's "not about money" when I said I couldn't afford them. Sorry sir, but it's ABSOLUTELY about money. Every single person here is here BECAUSE OF MONEY. If we had it, we would go to A REAL DENTIST. - I left in tears, because I am adult, and I can actually choose what services I want and can refuse service. I think that UB Dental School has to deal with students so often and is run like a factory, they forget that their patients are ADULTS and they treat everyone like a child there. If you value your time, your money, and your dignity, seek treatment elsewhere. TL;DR - They charge more than a real dentist (for exams and cleanings), even if you have no insurance, and they are worse in every way.
If you don’t know how the school works, The are students practicing on your teeth, they will destroy your teeth, they do not know anything and are literally learning as they go on your own teeth, if you’re okay with that because its cheap there are actual dentists that take your insurance at other places. The risk is very high for extraction and root canals after the students use you as a guinea pig because they are very careless. It WILL be the most REGRETFUL decision YOU ever make getting any work done on your teeth here. it will affect you for the rest of your life. Unless.. you are getting orthodontic treat(which is just straightening teeth) and even thats sub par. Please read the reviews of peoples stories and you will come to learn that this is not a place for anyone who values the health of their teeth.
Got referred here for some extractions lady calls to set up appointment but couldnt get one because she said that I missed a appointment I try to explain to her that I have never had appointment threw them this was the first time that I have even talk to them about appointment she sent me to her boss to talk about what was going on left voice mail they haven't reach back out it ben 2 months ppl say good thing about there visits but I cant say the same because of some one mix information up hopefully they reach out an got that straight up so I can get my surgery done
To start I want to say that i was really nervous about going, but as soon as I got there everyone was super nice and helpful. The whole team from start to finish was amazing. They even took an extra step to talk to me about antibiotics as I had infection before I had the 2 teeth pulled. I've never felt better after a extraction but again they did amazing work. I will be returning as I felt very comfortable with everyone who took thier time and actually listened and took amazing care of me. THANK YOU UB DENTAL!!!
