About Union Square Oral Surgery & Dental Implant Center
Union Square Oral Surgery & Dental Implant Center provides dental care on Post Street in the Union Square area of San Francisco, California. Wisdom teeth are removed when they are impacted, repeatedly infected, decayed, or damaging the tooth in front, since they arrive last and often into a jaw with no room left. Not every wisdom tooth needs to come out — one that erupts cleanly and can be kept clean is often left alone.
Dental anxiety is common, and most practices are used to working with nervous patients — through clear explanations of what is about to happen, a slower pace where needed, and sedation options for patients who want them. Avoiding the dentist out of anxiety tends to make eventual treatment more involved, not less.
Children benefit from starting dental visits early, generally by their first birthday or within six months of the first tooth coming through, mainly so they become familiar with the setting before any treatment is actually needed. Establishing that routine early tends to make ongoing checkups far less stressful for both child and parent.
Payment and insurance arrangements vary by practice and by treatment, so it is worth asking directly what is covered and what options exist for anything that is not, rather than assuming either way. Getting that clarified before treatment starts avoids surprises once it is underway.
Beyond any single treatment, most dental visits start with an examination — checking for decay, reviewing the gums, and looking at existing fillings or crowns — often alongside X-rays where there is a reason to look between or beneath teeth. That groundwork is what a dentist uses to explain any findings and set out next steps before you leave.
Routine attendance, roughly every six months for most people, is what actually keeps small problems small. A lot of decay and gum disease develops without any pain in its early stages, which is why regular checkups matter even when nothing seems to be wrong, rather than only booking an appointment once something hurts. Dr. Rather and team deliver a high quality, supportive, personal & professional level of care. My teenager needed her wisdom teeth removed, and all information including the cost, the pre- and post-surgery instructions, the procedure, the treatment plan, etc. were explained in clear, direct language. We knew what to expect from the office and knew what was expected of us. Plus, every member of team — Mandy, Michelle, and Dr. Rayher spoke directly to my 17 year-old during all discussions, so she felt comfortable and confident with the surgery and treatment plan. We traveled 5+ hours and had to stay in SF for a week, and it was well worth it for the quality of the procedure and the overall care.
Being a patient who finds visits to the dentist challenging I appreciate the care and attention Dr. Rayher and his team gave me. Their flexibility, communication and excellent care made this a better-than-expected experience. Jon P.
I needed a broken implant removed and replaced. They were very competent and professional. I am delighted with the outcome.
I had two implants done by Dr. Rayher without any problems. Dr. Rayher and his staff are super friendly. I would definitely choose Dr. Rayher if I need another implant.
I love Dr. Rayher! He’s super friendly, has great skills and exudes confidence and competence. He made what could have been a real ordeal—removing a tooth and putting in an implant, easy and stress free. When we was doing the actual procedure he would say things like buzz, buzz, buzz to prepare me for the next step all of which I found very comforting. Also his staff is wonderful and his office is beautiful— like 19th century San Francisco.
Surgery was painless and Dr. Rayher takes very good care of his patients. He takes care that you have a good and pleasant and safe experience . I went in for wisdom teeth removal and he did a very careful job! Kudos to the Doctor and the rest of the Staff of the office!
As a mother of a child and a health care professional, I know with certainty when high level of care has been delivered. My daughter needed to see Dr. Rayher and his amazing team for a procedure. The procedure went well - there was no question that this would be the case. The more important thing to me, was the fact that my young daughter felt seen and was treated with respect. She thanked me and mentioned to me many times after her procedure that the team was incredibly nice and patient with her throughout the process. Thank you all so much for treating her so well and allowing her to continue to trust health care providers. Ever so grateful for the care we received and will highly recommend this amazing practice to anyone who needs to he seen by a trusted oral surgery team.
A terrific office in every way. Dr. Rayher is smart, no nonsense, and inspires confidence. His whole staff is so nice too - efficient, welcoming, helpful, and professional. 2 of my kids had their wisdom teeth pulled here, and I’ve had 2 surgeries. No muss, no fuss. Our experiences have all been very positive. I won’t go anywhere else.
