About Upper East Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery

Upper East Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery operates on East 64th Street in the Manhattan area of New York. Wisdom teeth are removed when they are impacted, repeatedly infected, decayed, or damaging the tooth in front, since they arrive last and often into a jaw with no room left. Not every wisdom tooth needs to come out — one that erupts cleanly and can be kept clean is often left alone.

Day-to-day oral health still comes down to the basics between visits — brushing twice daily with fluoride toothpaste, cleaning between the teeth, and limiting how often sugary food and drink appear through the day matters more than the total amount eaten at once. Regular professional care is what catches whatever those habits do not.

Digital X-rays are a routine part of dental care because they show what a visual exam alone cannot — decay forming between teeth, bone loss below the gumline, and how developing adult teeth are positioned in children. They use a low radiation dose and are taken on a schedule matched to individual risk rather than at every single visit.

Left untreated, small dental problems tend not to stay small. A minor cavity that would have been a straightforward filling can progress to needing root canal treatment and a crown, and early gum inflammation that would have reversed with a good cleaning can progress toward bone loss around the teeth. Catching things early is generally the difference in both effort and cost.

Continuity matters in dental care — seeing the same practice over time means your history, X-rays, and any patterns in your oral health are already on file, rather than starting from scratch at each visit. That familiarity is part of what a regular dental home offers beyond any single appointment.

Dental anxiety is common, and most practices are used to working with nervous patients — through clear explanations of what is about to happen, a slower pace where needed, and sedation options for patients who want them. Avoiding the dentist out of anxiety tends to make eventual treatment more involved, not less. What age is best to have wisdom teeth taken out?
Late teens to early twenties is often easier, because the roots are less fully formed and bone is more forgiving, so healing tends to be quicker. Removal is still routinely done later when there is a reason for it.
How long is recovery after wisdom tooth removal?
Most of the swelling and discomfort settles within about a week, with the first two or three days the most noticeable. Surgical removal of an impacted tooth generally takes longer to recover from than a simple extraction.
What causes bad breath and can a dentist help?
Persistent bad breath most often comes from bacteria on the tongue and around the gumline, and gum disease is a frequent underlying cause. Because it is usually oral in origin, a dental examination is a sensible first step.

I had a great wisdom teeth extraction with Dr. Mahjoubi. Her and her team provided me with excellent care, I felt super informed and cared for throughout the process and procedure. She made sure to inform me of all risks and costs when creating my treatment plan which I really valued. I highly recommend this practice for wisdom teeth removal!

Dr. Mahjoubi made what could have been a horrific situation (regarding my wisdom teeth) much better. Though my surgery came with moderate complications, Dr. Mahjoubi was able to successfully right all of my body’s wrongs. As well, her office staff—including Janell, Daniel, and Tatiana—were immensely supportive, responsive, and always approached me with a positive attitude, which is especially helpful after the wild ride that is extraction recovery. I wholeheartedly recommend Dr. Mahjoubi’s care to anyone struggling with their teeth!

Dr Mahjoubi and team were excellent during my wisdom teeth removal. Everything went smoothly and recovery was quick and relatively painless! The office answered all my questions and made sure I had any information I needed for pre and post surgery. Would definitely recommend!

I had such great experience with Dr. Mahjoubi. I had to have a few teeth extracted over the course of two visits. They were so kind and professional. They made sure to review the price of everything with me beforehand so there were no surprises. The doctor made sure I wasn’t in any pain during both procedures and gave me thorough aftercare information and materials. I was incredibly nervous and they made sure that I was comfortable. They are very efficient, professional, and have good bedside manner. Can’t recommend them enough!

Dr. Mahjoubi and her team are amazing! I was in desperate need of a wisdom tooth extraction and I was able to get a consultation within a week! We decided on removing my remaining 3 wisdom teeth at once under sedation and had my surgery the following week. Everyone in the office is so warm and lovely and made the whole experience feel so easy! This was super important to me because I have a long-standing fear of the dentist and despite my lack of routine dental care, I wasn't made to feel ashamed or uncomfortable about the situation. I was given clear post-op instructions with follow-up the next week (which is not something I experience with my first wisdom tooth extraction elsewhere so I really appreciated this). I had very minimal pain after the extraction as well (on ibuprofen of course) which was amazing! Was able to get back to my life literally the next day! Overall an amazing experience and I will definitely be coming back for any other dental procedures I need done! Thank you so much for all your help!!

Overall, a very positive experience. I went for wisdom teeth extraction and the surgery and recovery went very well. I called the day before the procedure as I had not heard anything from their office and learned that they didn't have me scheduled. Not sure how that happened but luckily Dr Mahjoubi was still able to get me in, just a couple hours later than planned.

I just had a tooth pulled, and I couldn’t be happier with how it went. The whole process was super professional and calm. Dr. Mahjoubi was really knowledgeable, patient, and made sure I felt comfortable the entire time. The staff was friendly and helpful too, which made the whole visit stress-free. I felt really well taken care of and confident in their skills. Definitely recommend this place if you’re looking for great dental care!
