About Valley Endodontics & Oral Surgery

Valley Endodontics & Oral Surgery is a dental practice on East Earll Drive in the South Scottsdale area of Scottsdale, Arizona. Root canal treatment removes infected or inflamed tissue from inside a tooth, cleans and seals the space, and allows the natural tooth to be kept rather than extracted. Its reputation for being painful is largely outdated — carried out under local anaesthetic, it typically relieves pain rather than causing it.

Wisdom teeth are removed when they are impacted, repeatedly infected, decayed, or damaging the tooth in front, since they arrive last and often into a jaw with no room left. Not every wisdom tooth needs to come out — one that erupts cleanly and can be kept clean is often left alone.

Oral surgery covers procedures beyond routine treatment — surgical extractions including impacted wisdom teeth, implant placement, and bone grafting among the more common ones. The distinguishing feature is generally that tissue is opened and closed as part of the procedure, rather than treated at the surface.

Endodontic treatment concerns the nerve and pulp inside the tooth, most commonly through root canal treatment and retreatment of a previously treated tooth. Endodontists take on the more complex cases, including teeth with unusual root anatomy or a root canal that did not fully resolve.

A first appointment at a new practice typically covers a full examination, a review of your dental and medical history, and a professional cleaning, with X-rays if you do not have recent ones. It is also a reasonable time to raise any longer-term concerns, cosmetic or otherwise, so they can be factored into a plan going forward.

Day-to-day oral health still comes down to the basics between visits — brushing twice daily with fluoride toothpaste, cleaning between the teeth, and limiting how often sugary food and drink appear through the day matters more than the total amount eaten at once. Regular professional care is what catches whatever those habits do not. This page has the practice's contact details and full service list. Get in touch through it to ask questions or book a visit.

What is a surgical extraction and how is it different from a normal one?
A surgical extraction is used when a tooth cannot simply be lifted out — commonly because it is impacted, broken at the gumline, or has curved roots — and involves opening the gum or removing bone to access it.
Is oral surgery painful afterward?
Some soreness and swelling in the days after is normal and expected, managed with pain relief and, where needed, a short course of medication. Severe or worsening pain after the first few days is not typical and should be checked.
When would I be referred to an endodontist instead of treated by my regular dentist?
Many general dentists perform straightforward root canals themselves. A referral is more likely for a tooth with complex root anatomy, a previous root canal that has failed, or persistent pain that is difficult to diagnose.

Same thing everyone else says. Made me wait 90 minutes past scheduled time to get seen. Refused to use the x-rays I provided from THEIR referral, that were less than 24 hours old. Then TRIED to refuse to provide me a copy of the (IDENTICAL) x-rays they took, which I paid for and were literally duplicative. I reminded them refusing any medical records is against the law. Then they coughed up the x-rays pretty quickly. I believe this place scams people because they profit more from taking x-rays than providing substantive procedures.

Honestly, I thought the oral surgeon here-Dr Mark Schenkman & it was probably one in my top 10 best experiences with a medical professional. He explained the science to me very clearly, he was super down to earth & funny! Also, he cares about his nutrition and therefore his patients nutrition (that’s pretty cool) he is extremely knowledgeable not just about the dental world but also about the nutrition world and therefore he’s going to create a comprehensive plan based on all those factors which gives him more insight than other dentists. This dude is ethical. I’m terrified to get this tooth extracted but I’m glad he’s the one doing it. Oh and the office and office staff are lovely ❤️

I was in serious pain with my tooth that had an infection and serious problems. The doctor l saw today relieved my pain and prescribed an antibiotic, which the dentist I'd seen the day before didn't have the sense to do. I went back today to consult with the doctor who's going to do the extraction tomorrow! I feel like I'm in good hands!

My husband had a tooth that was fused with jaw bone. Leslie was so professional, knowledgeable, kind and got my husband in right away. She explained what our insurance covered and made our experience easy. Dr. Schenkman was wonderful, as well. He ensured he had all of my husband’s medical history correct and received a clearance from husband’s cardiologist before proceeding. Thankfully so, since my husband had previous heart attacks and was on certain medications. I would definitely recommend this doctor and office.
