About Waterplace Dental

Waterplace Dental is a dental practice on Liberty Street Southeast in the Central Area area of Salem, Oregon. Tooth Decay Treatment is also among the treatments offered here, and the practice can explain what it involves and whether it fits your situation at a consultation.

Continuity matters in dental care — seeing the same practice over time means your history, X-rays, and any patterns in your oral health are already on file, rather than starting from scratch at each visit. That familiarity is part of what a regular dental home offers beyond any single appointment.

Dental anxiety is common, and most practices are used to working with nervous patients — through clear explanations of what is about to happen, a slower pace where needed, and sedation options for patients who want them. Avoiding the dentist out of anxiety tends to make eventual treatment more involved, not less.

Children benefit from starting dental visits early, generally by their first birthday or within six months of the first tooth coming through, mainly so they become familiar with the setting before any treatment is actually needed. Establishing that routine early tends to make ongoing checkups far less stressful for both child and parent.

Payment and insurance arrangements vary by practice and by treatment, so it is worth asking directly what is covered and what options exist for anything that is not, rather than assuming either way. Getting that clarified before treatment starts avoids surprises once it is underway.

Beyond any single treatment, most dental visits start with an examination — checking for decay, reviewing the gums, and looking at existing fillings or crowns — often alongside X-rays where there is a reason to look between or beneath teeth. That groundwork is what a dentist uses to explain any findings and set out next steps before you leave. What services does Waterplace Dental offer?
Listed services at Waterplace Dental include Tooth Decay Treatment. The full list is shown on this page.
What does tooth decay feel like in the early stages?
Usually nothing at all, which is the difficulty. Decay tends to become noticeable only once it approaches the nerve, so a cavity is often found at a check-up rather than because it hurt.
What causes cavities?
Bacteria in plaque feed on sugars and starches and produce acid, which dissolves mineral out of the enamel. Frequency matters more than quantity — grazing on sugary food or sipping sweet drinks through the day keeps the mouth acidic for longer than eating the same amount at once.
Is it normal for teeth to be sensitive to cold?
Mild, brief sensitivity is common and often relates to exposed root surfaces or worn enamel. Sensitivity that lingers after the cold is removed is more significant and worth having examined, as it can indicate the nerve is involved.

I had a few fillings done at this office and one started to hurt. I revisited them and they assured me it was all normal. I got another opinion and the new dentist fixed the pain due to the filling being too high. After each visit I paid exactly what I was told to. Exactly a year later I was called non stop about a large balance owed that was late. They said they were behind on billing and are cleaning up their books and that I had to pay it now. Lisa is a very rude person and was unwilling to help. A few days later it was sent to collections. Overall a horrible experience and wouldn't recommend this office to anyone.

Waterplace Dental is outstanding. Not just Dr. Nakagawa, either; each and every hygienist and admin specialist I've interacted with has been caring, professional, and great at what they do. Special thanks to Megan at the front desk. She handles a difficult job, scheduling and contacting and rescheduling patients, and she makes it look easy and never makes it seem like a burden.
