About West Ashley Family Dentistry
A cleaning, two X-rays, and a frank conversation about the molar that has been aching on cold drinks — that is the shape of most appointments at 811 Saint Andrews Boulevard. West Ashley Family Dentistry operates as a general office first: exams and hygiene, fillings, periodontal therapy for gums that bleed when you floss, root canal treatment, and the crowns, bridges, dentures and partials that follow once a tooth has lost too much structure to hold a filling. Dr. James W. Dickert, DMD and Dr. Agatha Lynn, DMD both see patients here; Dr. Lynn also teaches at the Medical University of South Carolina College of Dental Medicine, a short drive across the Ashley River.
Breadth is where a general practice earns its place, but the seams are worth knowing. Dental implants appear on the service list, and an implant is really two jobs: the fixture placed into bone, then the crown built onto it months later. Some general dentists do both halves; many restore and refer the surgery to an oral surgeon or periodontist. Orthodontics splits along a similar line — Invisalign handles crowding, spacing and the drift that shows up years after old braces came off, while a skeletal bite discrepancy or an impacted canine belongs with an orthodontist. Ask at the consultation which half stays in-house. Dr. Dickert's stated approach is a conservative one, which in dentistry means not treating what does not yet need treating, and that instinct usually extends to being straight about referrals.
Sedation dentistry is offered, and it is the practical answer for adults who have avoided a chair for a decade and now face several visits' worth of work. Cosmetic services run to bonding, porcelain veneers and whitening. One honest limitation: whitening gel works on natural tooth structure and on nothing artificial. Porcelain crowns, veneers and the composite used to rebuild a chipped edge all hold the color chosen on the day they were placed, so a front tooth repaired years ago can end up looking darker than everything around it. Sequence matters — whiten first, let the color settle, then match new restorations to the result.
Saint Andrews Boulevard runs through the older, denser core of West Ashley, close enough to the Ashley River bridges that downtown workers can double back at the end of a shift. Hours are Monday through Thursday, 8:00am to 5:00pm, with nothing on Friday or the weekend, so the office suits patients with some weekday flexibility rather than fixed-shift schedules.

Awesome experience
After recently moving to the area, I needed to find a new dentist. My previous dentist had recommended that I get two crowns, so I expected that would be my only option. Dr. Dickert at West Ashley Family Dentistry took the time to thoroughly evaluate my situation and recommended a much more conservative approach. The results have been outstanding—my tooth pain is completely gone, and I was able to avoid unnecessary crowns. I really appreciated that Dr. Dickert took the time to listen carefully to what I was experiencing, explain his recommendations, and answer every one of my questions in a way that was easy to understand. It's clear that Dr. Dickert tailors treatment to each individual's needs rather than taking a one-size-fits-all approach. I couldn't be happier with the care I received and highly recommend Dr. Dickert and the entire team at West Ashley Family Dentistry.
Friendly staff and very knowledgeable Dentist!
Great experience!
Wonderful experience from the entire staff!
I recently had the ICON treatment done at my dentist’s office, and I am extremely pleased with the results. The improvement in the appearance of my teeth exceeded my expectations, and the procedure was comfortable and explained thoroughly from start to finish. I have been a patient at this practice for several years, and the level of care has always been outstanding. The entire team is professional, friendly, and genuinely cares about their patients. They consistently take the time to answer questions and make sure I feel comfortable during every visit. I highly recommend this dental office to anyone looking for quality dental care. My experience with the ICON treatment was excellent, and I couldn’t be happier with the results. Thank you for continuing to provide such exceptional care!
Dr Dickert and all of his assistants have countless times provided the absolute best care for my dental health. Dickert is very open and communicative on his methods and why he does what he does, in such a way that is easy to understand what's being done, which is comforting to say the least, but also useful in understanding my oral health. Couldn't recommend them more.
In my many, many years of dental treatment and journey to dentures I've never had a dentist spend as much time with me as Dr. Dickert did on my very first appointment! He very thoroughly explained my options, discussed the pros and cons of each option, and was as clear as possible during a first appointment what the financials are of each option. I'm so grateful for having found this practice and expect to be a patient for many years to come.
I am halfway through my TMJ treatment, with the extra barrier of EDS, and I already feel SO MUCH relief in my everyday life. I went in with so much inflammation, pain, locking and Dr. Dickert (hope that’s how you spell it) knew what to do immediately! His own experince with this issue has given him insight and understanding others may not have. Brooke, the assistant is also so wonderful and helpful. She always has such a smile on her face. From the front desk to the Doctor, they are ALWAYS prepared and take the time to talk to you and truly listen. I am sooo excited to get my personalized treatment done and be free of this jaw pain!’
Our experience today was excellent with West Ashley Family Dentistry.. Dr. Dichert and his Staff were Professional and communicative, and went above and beyond. I chose this practice as I wanted a Dentist who was more conservative in his practice. I left feeling like I have found what I sought. I think this is a Practice which affords quality time spent with Patients, and with genuine care which seems to have gone missing with some we have experienced.
