Whitman-Walker Health at 1525

Every time I was there for appointments, I was treated very well. My provider was always very patient and attentive explaining everything to me. From the reception until the pharmacy service, I have nothing to complain about.

Staff acted inconvenienced by the presence of patients. Really unfortunate approach to supporting community

Changing this review from 2 stars to 1 star. It is still the case that their public benefits never picks up calls or returns voicemails, so you're better off coming in in person to demand the date and time to see them rather than hoping that they'll return your call, because they won't. But at least in the past they didn't lie about those appointments being a "telephone visit", as their portal says. I even called them to double-check, and their front desk assured me that the appointment will be over the phone. It wasn't, the time came and went, and no one called me. I called their front desk about it, and they did the same useless thing they always do - redirect me to the public benefits line, which, again, never picks up and never returns voicemails. So I rushed to the clinic in person before my appointment ran out, and there the front desk interrupted me with "please have a seat" before I even explained the situation. I interrupted his interruption, and found out that the appointment is an in-person appointment after all, but now it will be pushed to 1 and a half hours later. "Thanks" for wasting my time, I'll make sure not to trust your portal AND your personnel when they claim an appointment is over the phone. OLD REVIEW: The bureaucracy of trying to reach their billing department has been getting worse in recent years. They did occasionally forget to apply the Sliding Fee Scale to my bill, but in the past they were at least quick to fix it. These days they never return the voicemails (let alone pick up - they never pick up), and even when they themselves send "Help?" emails that ask you if you have an issue with your bill, they leave your response to that email unanswered. Only almost a month later, when my dental appointment was coming up and their billing team received a kick from their dental team, they finally reached out to me, and it transpired that my SFS expired and has to be updated. But instead of simply renewing my SFS they gave me the runaround of trying to apply for Medicaid first (due to becoming a DC resident), even though I tried to explain to them that it may have negative consequences for my immigration status. When I came in in person, the public benefits person was nice and genuinely tried to help me, so he called their legal team and the legal specialist confirmed that receiving Medicaid will look bad if I ever need to pass a public charge test. But when I later noticed that what they said seems to contradict some of the things in articles that my immigration attorney sent to me, and I tried to clarify that by calling them myself, their legal team refused to speak to me because I have an attorney. I tried to make Medicaid work just like you asked me, but if you guys don't want to save your own money, fine, now I'm able to say that your legal team left me no option but to be on SFS. No difference to me. Ultimately I was unable to renew my SFS that day (to be fair, for no fault on WW part), and had to cancel the appointment I had later than day as well as next week. But even though the front desk assured me that my appointments will be cancelled, this was never done, and I kept receiving texts that I "missed" my appointment, and when I called I confirmed that neither appointment was cancelled. To make up for a cancelled appointment, I tried to schedule STI testing with their free STI clinic on the second floor. They also almost never pick up, but at least they return voicemails. But their availability has much to be desired, often the only option is next week, so if you need more urgent testing, you'll have better luck with other STI clinics like Us helping us. I was pleasantly surprised how little bureaucracy and barriers to reach actual people that clinic has compared to Whitman-Walker. Will be using that clinic for STI testing from now on. Whitman-Walker is okay for what it is, it's an affordable clinic. But I found them to be increasingly difficult to deal with because of the disorganization and the growing bureaucracy, and will try to minimize using their services in the future.

Having an amazing experience with them years ago, I can proudly say still clean today—the facility remains impeccably run, professional, and welcoming from the moment you walk through the doors. My counselor, Chris, was phenomenal. What truly sets their care apart is the brilliant philosophical approach that seamlessly bridges deep insight with practical daily life skills. Instead of just talking through challenges, they equip you with actionable, real-world tools that genuinely transform your day-to-day life. The entire environment is inclusive, supportive, and deeply focused on holistic well-being. Highly recommend this incredible institution to anyone looking for top-tier, compassionate healthcare and counseling!

Few businesses mean better than Whitman Walker, but the reason of the 3 stars as opposed to 5 comes from the communication and mgmt side. Expect long hold times for the pharmacy.. so much so that I dread having to call. I'm 63 and these are some of the worst hold times I've ever experienced unless you get lucky. They all seem a little overwhelmed.

Missing and/or conflicting info from the appointment scheduling call all the way to when i actually showed up for the appointment, where building security was simultaneously giving me the runaround as to where to go AND telling me “keep smiling and someone will give you a check” (wild to say to anyone, but sexism when you’re coming in to a ‘safe space’ to get testosterone is layers of wild). This saga culminated in me missing my appointment with no chance to be seen for another two weeks. Waste of a commute, won’t be returning.

Years ago, I had a couple frustrating experiences at Whitman-Walker, but recently I used their urgent care and it was great: easy to book, reasonable wait, and able to get meds at the pharmacy. Sarah King and Sasha were efficient, knowledgeable, and personable.

I had a great experience here with my provider, Pele Solell-Knepler. I look forward to returning under her care! She was kind, attentive, and did an excellent job listening and problem-solving with me. I really appreciated how supported and heard I felt throughout the appointment.

My child goes to this clinic and has for years but we are constantly battling getting them their medication on time. The doctors don't respond. The apps are unhelpful and glitched. And they are often times delayed on their medication. It's like they make you jump through hoops for absolutely no reason other than lack of order. And let me tell you I do not want to be responded to by an AI bot apologizing for the lack of care and the abandonment of their Hippocratic Oath. Buyer beware..
