Not every wisdom tooth has to come out, which is an odd thing to hear from an office that removes wisdom teeth and nothing else, but it is the right question to arrive with. A third molar that has erupted upright, meets its opposite number and can actually be brushed is often left alone and watched. The trouble comes from the ones caught halfway. By the mid-thirties the roots are finished, sometimes curved around the inferior alveolar canal, and the surrounding bone is denser, so the surgery takes longer and the odds of prolonged numbness or a slow socket climb.
