About Park Slope Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, PLLC

Park Slope Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, PLLC provides dental care on Union Street in Brooklyn, New York. Wisdom teeth are removed when they are impacted, repeatedly infected, decayed, or damaging the tooth in front, since they arrive last and often into a jaw with no room left. Not every wisdom tooth needs to come out — one that erupts cleanly and can be kept clean is often left alone.

Oral surgery covers procedures beyond routine treatment — surgical extractions including impacted wisdom teeth, implant placement, and bone grafting among the more common ones. The distinguishing feature is generally that tissue is opened and closed as part of the procedure, rather than treated at the surface.

Oral and maxillofacial surgery covers surgical conditions of the face, jaw, and mouth, from wisdom teeth and jaw realignment through to facial trauma and reconstruction, carried out by surgeons trained in both dentistry and surgery.

Left untreated, small dental problems tend not to stay small. A minor cavity that would have been a straightforward filling can progress to needing root canal treatment and a crown, and early gum inflammation that would have reversed with a good cleaning can progress toward bone loss around the teeth. Catching things early is generally the difference in both effort and cost.

Continuity matters in dental care — seeing the same practice over time means your history, X-rays, and any patterns in your oral health are already on file, rather than starting from scratch at each visit. That familiarity is part of what a regular dental home offers beyond any single appointment.

Dental anxiety is common, and most practices are used to working with nervous patients — through clear explanations of what is about to happen, a slower pace where needed, and sedation options for patients who want them. Avoiding the dentist out of anxiety tends to make eventual treatment more involved, not less. Why do wisdom teeth cause problems?
They arrive last, often into a jaw with no room left, so they become impacted or come through at an angle. Partly erupted wisdom teeth are also very difficult to clean, which is why they are prone to repeated infection and decay.
Do wisdom teeth always need to be removed?
No. Wisdom teeth that come through cleanly, in a good position, and can be kept clean are often left alone. Removal is generally advised when they are impacted, repeatedly infected, decayed, or damaging the tooth in front.

Implant Placement Concerns and Refusal to Resolve In 2019, Dr. Chionchio placed a dental implant for me at Park Slope Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery. Several years later, I developed problems involving the adjacent tooth that ultimately required root canal treatment. During my evaluation in Japan, an American Board-certified endodontist reviewed my radiographic and CBCT images and provided a written opinion stating that the implant was not positioned correctly, was extremely close to the adjacent tooth, and likely contributed to the need for root canal treatment. I later obtained a written statement from another implant dentist who reviewed the radiographic and CBCT images and confirmed that the implant is positioned in close proximity to the adjacent tooth. I provided my CBCT scan and supporting information to Park Slope Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery for review. Dr. Chionchio disagreed with the opinions I obtained and maintained that the implant was healthy and functioning properly. After multiple communications and requests for reimbursement for both the implant treatment and the treatment required for the adjacent tooth, the office declined any reimbursement or financial assistance. I understand that dental professionals may disagree about diagnosis and causation. However, I was disappointed by the concerns raised by independent specialists, the treatment costs I incurred, and the office's refusal to provide any assistance in resolving the matter.

I had all 3 of my wisdom teeth removed here in one visit and had an excellent experience from start to finish. Every single staff member was incredibly kind, professional, and reassuring. I was very nervous before the procedure, but the entire team made me feel comfortable and well cared for. Dr. Nguyen and his assistant explained everything clearly, and the procedure went much more smoothly than I expected. If you're afraid of the dentist or have been putting off having your wisdom teeth removed, I highly recommend this office. They made what I thought would be a stressful experience surprisingly easy. I'm very grateful for the outstanding care I received.

In a nutshell, Park Slope Oral is the only place that I recommend for Oral Surgery. After going to Dr. Chinochio to have a toothe extraction and my implant work done I never considered another surgeon. The office is very friendly and professional. Dr. Chinochio is excellent. I haven't had to use pain meds after surgery, he also checks up on you to make sure everything is alright after the surgery. In short, I highly recommend Park Slope Oral.

Dr. Sengupta and her team are the absolute best! Front desk was friendly, patient and helpful. Once my toochie was in the chair, the assistant was a sweetheart. She reassured me Dr. Sengupta was going to make this process seamless and she did! She explained what needed to be done, the process, aftercare, answered any questions I had. Very thorough. It was a painless experience and even now 2 days later I feel little to no pain following the aftercare instructions. Thank you for a great experience!

Dr. Chionchio is an amazing oral surgeon. He performed a complicated extraction of one of my lower molars, cleaned out a deep infection— all this without any significant pain besides mild soreness. He is as nice as he is skilled. His staff is excellent and very friendly. If I require more oral surgery, Dr Chionchio, without question, would be the one to do it
