A surgeon who trained for six years after dental school handles a different category of problem than the office that cleans your teeth. Cypress Bend Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery on Rue Bastille in south Lafayette exists for those cases: impacted wisdom teeth, teeth fractured too far below the gum to be pulled conventionally, jaws that meet incorrectly at the skeletal level, TMJ pain that has not responded to conservative care, facial injuries, and the bone grafting that makes implant placement possible in a ridge that has already resorbed. Referrals come from general dentists, orthodontists and emergency departments.
Most people booking a first consultation are really trying to work out how much intervention their situation needs. Not every impacted third molar has to come out. One that is fully covered by bone, causing no symptoms and not damaging the second molar can sometimes be monitored, although surgical recovery gets harder with age and the roots grow closer to the nerve over time. Dr. Justin B. Stanford owns the practice. A Louisiana native, he earned his dental degree at LSU School of Dentistry and completed a six-year oral and maxillofacial surgery residency at the University of Florida, training that covered orthognathic surgery, TMJ, anesthesia, paediatric cases, implantology, oral pathology, facial trauma, wisdom tooth removal, bone grafting and advanced dentoalveolar procedures. Anesthesia sits inside that residency, which is why office-based surgery under sedation is standard in this specialty rather than an added-on service.
The office opens at 7:30am every weekday and closes at 5pm early in the week, 4:30pm on Thursday and 1pm on Friday, a schedule shaped around morning surgical blocks, so expect the first appointments offered to be early ones. Rue Bastille is tucked into the River Ranch side of south Lafayette, convenient for patients from Youngsville and Broussard and less so if you are coming from north of I-10 during traffic. If your dentist referred you, ask for the panoramic or 3D image to be sent across ahead of the visit; it often spares you a repeat scan at the surgical consultation.
