In 1969, a group of five dentists, led by Drs. Daro A. Buchanan and Richard O’Brien, formed Dental Health Associates of Madison (DHA). Both dentists were single practitioners for 15 years, but saw the need for a complete range of services at a single location. Since DHA’s inception in the late 1960’s, the concept of dentists joining together has provided many benefits for both the patients and the practitioners. As a group, our dentists recognize that peer review and shared consultation, as well as a comprehensive approach to care, assure high quality dental care. So while many things have changed over the years, the basic premise at DHA remains the same. DHA strives to give the best possible dental health care to our patients.

Use the ranking as a starting point, then narrow the shortlist based on the kind of care you actually need.
If you want routine or family care
Prioritize review consistency, insurance friendliness, practical hours, and a broad general-dentistry service mix over marketing language alone.
If urgency matters
Confirm same-day capacity, after-hours guidance, and whether the clinic handles urgent restorative work in-house or refers out.
If affordability matters most
Compare financing signals, insurance notes, and the local cost guide. A higher-ranked clinic is not automatically the best value for your specific treatment.
Questions to ask before booking
Do you accept my insurance or offer payment plans?
Are you taking new patients right now?
Do you handle my treatment in-house?
What is the total expected cost before treatment starts?

Frequently Asked Questions
20 questions answered by our editorial team
A routine dental checkup in Madison, Wisconsin typically costs between $75 and $200 without insurance. Most dental insurance plans cover preventive visits at 100%.
The American Dental Association recommends visiting your dentist at least twice a year for routine cleanings and exams. Some patients with gum disease or other conditions may need more frequent visits.
General dentists provide comprehensive oral care including cleanings, fillings, crowns, root canals, extractions, and preventive care. They also screen for oral cancer and refer to specialists when needed.
Most dental insurance plans cover preventive care (exams, cleanings, X-rays) at 80-100%. Basic procedures like fillings are typically covered at 70-80%, and major work at 50%.
General dentists provide comprehensive care for all ages. Specialists (orthodontists, endodontists, periodontists, etc.) focus on specific areas after completing additional training beyond dental school.
Look for dentists with strong Google reviews, proper state licensure, modern technology, and transparent pricing. Our list evaluates all these factors for Madison, Wisconsin practices.
Your first visit typically includes a comprehensive exam, full-mouth X-rays, oral cancer screening, gum health assessment, and a professional cleaning. The dentist will discuss any findings and create a treatment plan.
Yes. Modern digital X-rays use very low radiation — about the same as a short airplane flight. They are essential for detecting cavities between teeth, bone loss, and other issues not visible during a visual exam.
A professional dental cleaning removes plaque and tartar that brushing and flossing miss. It helps prevent cavities, gum disease, and bad breath. Regular cleanings also allow early detection of dental problems.
Yes, many general dentists offer cosmetic services like teeth whitening, bonding, and veneers. However, for complex cosmetic work, you may want a dentist with specific cosmetic training.
Many Madison dentists offer sedation options including nitrous oxide (laughing gas), oral sedation, and IV sedation. Look for practices that specifically advertise anxiety-free or sedation dentistry.
Yes, most general dentists treat patients of all ages including children. However, pediatric dentists have additional training specifically for children and may be better for very young or anxious kids.
See a dentist immediately if you experience severe tooth pain, a knocked-out tooth, significant bleeding, swelling in your face or gums, or a broken/cracked tooth.
Composite (tooth-colored) fillings in Madison typically cost $150 to $400 per tooth depending on size and location. Dental insurance usually covers 70-80% of filling costs.
Most dental practices in Madison accept major insurance plans, credit cards, and cash. Many also offer payment plans through CareCredit or in-house financing for larger treatments.
Occasional minor bleeding can occur, but regular bleeding is a sign of gum disease (gingivitis). See your dentist for an evaluation — early gum disease is reversible with proper treatment.
Traditional crowns require two visits over 2-3 weeks. Same-day crowns using CAD/CAM technology (like CEREC) can be completed in a single visit at practices that have this equipment.
Deep cleaning (scaling and root planing) removes bacteria below the gumline. It is recommended when you have gum disease with pockets deeper than 4mm. It typically costs $200-$400 per quadrant.
Yes, you can switch dentists at any time. Your previous dentist is required to transfer your records. However, switching mid-treatment may affect continuity of care and insurance coverage.
Our list highlights Madison practices that treat all ages, offer family scheduling, and provide a welcoming environment for children. Look for practices with extended hours and weekend availability.
